THE TRUTH ABOUT PREMARIN

PREMARIN SIDE EFFECTS REPORTED BY WOMEN
AND DENIED BY DOCTORS - Letters 2002

TO ALL ESTROGEN AND PROGESTIN USERS

Date: Tues., Jan. 15, 2002
Subject: TO THE WOMEN OF AMERICA:

Get off the junk. I had been taking Premarin and Provera for 8 years. Recently, I recited a report to my doctor that my husband had heard. Essentially, the risk of cancer increases to 45% after two years. My doctor refuted what I repeated to her. And why did she not take me off these drugs? Was she really keeping up with medicine? About one month after that, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It will be cured because it was caught in the early stages. When I learned that I had breast cancer though, I was devastated. Even .01 chance of getting cancer or the host of other serious complications is not worth taking it. WE HAVE CONTROL OF OUR OWN LIVES, NOT THE DOCTORS, NOT THE DRUG COMPANIES, NOR THE FDA WHO PROMOTE THE EFFICACY OF THESE PRODUCTS. I was told not to take any Provera, Progestin, or soy because they feed estrogen receptor cells, which feed cancer cells. Why take them in the first place. My hot flashes and night sweats did not return. And I am sure that I would not have suffered those symptoms for a long period of time. R.Z.

Ed. Note: The Office of Drug Risk Assessment of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calculates that only 1% of Adverse Drug Reactions are reported. In another recent article, there was an estimated 34% fold discrepancy in the number of deaths attributed to adverse drug reactions in the United States. These studies make it all the more important for menopausal women to fully understand the potential consequences of any form of hormonal supplementation that for the majority of women is elective, rather than required. Many reports showing negative health effects on women using HRT have surfaced over the last five years. Doctors have pretty much ignored these studies and reports, telling women: "Don't panic and to wait until the large studies come out", referring to the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) that was halted in May of 2002 because the "Risks Outweigh the Benefits". That is exactly what I have stated on this web site since 1997. For the second year in a row, it was reported in the national news - 100,000 people die each year due to medical mistakes - drug interactions, drug side effects, wrong drugs taken due to misinterpreting prescriptions. How many of these thousands were due to HRT?

Looking for a Safe Alternative? Please read the following memo.

MEMO

Aarisse Health Care Products - August 2002

In light of current news reports proving HRT and synthetic Progestin-Estrogen* hormonal drugs [Premarin, Provera and Prempro] are causes of heart disease, strokes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and pulmonary embolisms. . . there is ProgestaPlus natural progesterone cream. . . The Better Choice! Women - searching for an alternative to these drugs - should be delighted to know that ProgestaPlus is the safe, effective, all natural progesterone cream for PMS and menopause. * NOTE: Progestin is NOT the same as Progesterone. There is an undisputed difference between bio-identical natural progesterone molecules and synthetic 'Progestin' as used in 'The Pill', Prempro and Provera. In the WHI study referred to in the news articles it was not clearly indicated that the HRT given contained synthetic NOT natural hormones. Though they did use the proper word "Progestin" a clarification of these two very different hormones should have been explained. Synthetic progesterone i.e. ŒProgestin¹ was the chemical HRT drug responsible for increased breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, blood clots and coronary embolisms. Natural progesterone is a safe and effective menopausal alternative while synthetic Progestin is not. Tens of millions of women are now confused and falsely alarmed, unaware that pharmaceutically manufactured synthetic progestin (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) is the culprit NOT natural progesterone (obtained from plants such as Wild Mexican Yam and Soya). Once women know the difference they are able to make an informed intelligent choice and use safe natural progesterone cream. We're here to help women, of all ages, find safe, natural, effective solutions for better health....naturally. Visit us for more information at http://www.healthyhormones.com.

Subject: Hair Loss, Rash with Itching while on Premarin

I read your site with interest, I started Premarin or other HRT 18 years ago (now on Premarin) and have experienced hair loss but more alarming is the horrible skin rashes with intense itching that have increased. I just recently have begun to suspect the Premarin, have you heard about any other women experiencing similar symptoms? Please help, I'm about at my wit's end and I am under a doctor's care for it but he hasn't suggested it could be the premarin.

Subject: Another Victim of Premarin/Provera & PremPro

I am very unhappy to report to you and all women of the world that I have been a victim of Premarin/Provera and then Prempro from 1995-2002. I was advised to take it for prevention of osteoporosis as a relative has a bad case and I am small and Asian.
In 2000-2001 I was administered Prefest and Activella, each about four months as a trial. I started slight spotting in 2000 and then heavier in 2002. Endometrial lining was normal in 2000, then to 18 mm in 2002. Although I frequently questioned the hormone and the WHI report to the doctors, I was told the benefits would far exceed the risks. It was until a D&C that revealed a stage 1 endomedrial adenocarcinoma and definitely a hysterectomy.
This surgery is unneccesary and I do not look for the pain and frustrations, especially in the harsh winters in the North. Wish me luck, world!!!!
I did not have hot flash problems. My bone density has not really improved. I do not believe that estrogen has helped my bones, but it has injured other parts of my body tremendously. I have been a very healthy person, more so than women of my age. To answer L.D.'s 1/13/02 letter about hair loss. Yes, I have tremendous hair loss. Again, the doctors couldn't tell me wheter it was due to Premarin. I suspected so. Now, you have proved to me as true. I also have normal thyroid glands, so there is no hair loss from that part.
No more hormones and no more medications. My bones will remain the same. That's OK.

Subject: Estratest or Premarin

Hi, I am a 49 year old married female who had a complete hysterectomy in 1986. I used Premarin for 14 yrs, thank God I have not had any serious problems, not that I know of, as reported on your website from some of the other women. Only problem I have had was low  libido, and vaginal dryness.  Although the low libido was causing a lots of problems in my sex life with my husband, we had to go back to my physician, he then sent us to an OB-GYN. She recommended and prescribed "Estratest Tab" to help regain lubrication, plus help my other episodes. I have been taking it for about 2 years. "Did it work or make a difference; well....don't know, could be or could be just a mind control thing going on here because I love my husband so much, I'll try anything to make our sex life better. I have tried to get more information on this drug, but haven't had any success. Is Estratest and Premarin made from the same product. (Horses)? Please give me some input on what you think of Estratest. Is it safe?
Thanks

Subject: Re: Info On Premarin

I am a 46 year old woman living in Ontario, Canada, who is experiencing the early signs of menopause. The hot flashes and sweats are unbearable, and it makes it pretty hard to function at work every day, when you don't sleep at night. Early this week, I went to visit my family physician, explaining my problem to him, and he absolutely refused to give me hormone replacement therapy. I was totally irate at the fact that he wouln't prescribe something for me. Instead he referred me to a gynecologist, and told me he wouldn't be responsible for prescribing something that he had heard so much negativity about lately. I have to wait until December to get in to see the gynecologist, and now, after reading your letters, I'm glad. I was very uninformed as to the side effects of this therapy, and "Thank You" for informing me and a big thank you to all those who have written about the horror stories that they've experienced. I feel sorry for them and thank God they shared the knowledge that they have with women who, otherwise, wouldn't know about HRT. I also thank my family physician, for not giving in to me, and not prescribing it to me. Again, Thank you, from the bottom of my heart that still beats normally!

Subject: Prescribed Zoloft for Hot Flashes

Well, I went to the Doctor today for my yearly check up and was quite anxious to see what he would give me for my continuing Hot Flashes and nite sweats, well, he suggested Zoloft, Have you heard that drug being used yet, he said it works great for Hot Flashes, of course I was quite leary of that anti-depressent drug, I have a Dom care home with 3 Mentally Handicapped people and I know what all these drugs can do to you so I said no and then took the perscription in case after I looked it up to see the side effects, well needless to say I don't think I will be getting that one filled, it was scary just reading about it. I told him I had bought a bottle of Soy and so far hadn't worked to good and he said I probably couldn't get anything strong enough, Don't get me wrong, He is a very good Dr. and I love him for all he has done for me in the past but I don't think any of them have really taken the time and investigated the side effects of Premarin. I was just wondering if anyone else out there has been given this Zoloft drug for Hot flashes? Let me here from you girls, I'm anxious to here from any one how there getting read of there flashes and sweats. My email address: froggie@npacc.net

Subject: Heart Attack, Death and Premarin

My mother was on Premarin and has never had any problems except for a little high blood pressure and one night after coming home from the doctor that day had a heart attack and died. The family history on her side has always been that the women have died from cancer and the men died from heart attacks. I need help on the lawsuit of the drug Premarin and I'm begging anyone and everyone to help me with any information on it. I know that this drug killed her at the age of 56 because the rest of her family have lived til they where 80 and 90 years old. Please, help me. I feel Wyeth-Ayerst, the medical community, and the FDA all knew the potential harm of this drug and all should be held accountable. Collinspcps@wmconnect.com

Subject: Premarin & adverse side effects on my health

I have been a user of Premarin for 23 years. At age 28, I had to have a complete abdominal hysterectomy and immediately was given a prescription for Premarin. My Mother also had a similar experience and was put on Premarin at an early age.
My Mother and I used to have extremely low blood pressure. After taking Premarin, we both have high blood pressure. We also have had gallbladder disease and have had our gallbladders removed. We also have irritable bowel syndrome and I recently have had problems with my liver.
I believe Premarin is responsible for all of the negative changes in our health. We have discontinued use of this medication. I just hope it isn't too late for us. I told my doctor I had quit taking Premarin and he quickly replied "that's okay". He didn't even try to tell me to taper off from this medication.
I believe doctors have known for a very long time this medication is capable of many adverse effects on women. Shame on Wyeth for manufacturing this drug which has caused so many health problems!
Thank you for letting me tell my story.

The other things I failed to mention were both my mother and I have fibrocystic breasts. I also have developed a heart murmur and a leaky right tricuspid valve. My Mother has to take medication for her heart. It tends to race or skip beats. I believe these symptoms are also from long term use of Premarin. I have said to family and friends if there ever was a lawsuit against this medication, I would probably be the first in line.

Subject: Premarin Side Effects

Hi,
I have taking Premarin since 1979 and I am 69 years old. I pulled up your web site by chance and read all the letters women have written about side effects while using Premarin and they are real scary. I would like to know if there is anything else that would be safer to use. B.S.

Subject: Good News

I had a total hysterectomy 8 years ago and my doctor put me on Premarin I started having bad migraines, was disinterested in almost everything, lost a lot of sleep, and just could not focus on much at work. Due to the negative information coming out about Premarin, I switched to an all natural replacement cream you rub onto the inner part of your arms. Since taking this alternative natural cream I have changed. I'm alert, I'm energetic, I sleep more at night than I have in a long time, and most of all, my headaches and migraines have all stopped. I feel great. This cream is BIEST 2/1/PROG 50 MG Gel. Not all pharmacies sell it, in fact here in Albuquerque, NM only 1 pharmacy makes it here where I live: (Highland Pharmacy (505) 275-4288). You still need a doctor's prescription, but it was well worth it for me. All I did was tell my doctor that I do not want to take Premarin anymore, and told her I wanted to try this all-natural replacement. Several of my office co-workers have switched and we all notice a big difference in the way we feel. It's great. I decided to spread this info, because after reading some of the emails on your site, I realized that many of you would like to get off of Premarin but did not know what else to use or where to turn. Good Luck,
D.P.

Subject: Had Heart Attack - Doc continued Premarin 1.25

HI,
Well I guess I need to join the ranks of women who took their doctors advice and took Premarin. I had a complete hysterectomy in 1990 at the age of 37 and have been on Premarin 1.25 mg up until a week ago. I have started eating Edamame (Soy Beans) in the in the hopes that it will lessen some of the withdrawal symptoms. To back track a little, I suffered a severe heart attack in September of 2000 at the age of 47, and luckily I was in the hospital ER when I flat lined. Three zaps latter I was back with the living, I spent 4 days in ICU and two more days on the floor for a total of 6 miserable days, and several more weeks of recovery. Until I started reading about Premarin I never once suspected that the Premarin may have had something to do with my heart attack. Like many of you I have gained a lot of weight about 30 pounds, prior to taking Premarin I weighed 120. I also experience palpitations, severe leg and foot cramps, as well as headaches, fatigue, etc. etc. Thanks for listening I feel better just venting, Best wishes to all of you that have suffered (including the mares). Cordially,
Deb

Subject: Premarin & Provera Caused Disability

In 1992 my doctor gave me Premarin and Provera to dissolve a cyst on my left ovary. The cyst burst and within a week I was in the hospital poisoned.
I now have severe nerve damage in both legs, feet and hands and my liver is damaged. I have been in and out of physical therapy for ten years now. I have stacks of notes that I have saved over these 10 years. The doctors refused to take me seriously. I was in perfect health prior to 1992. Now I am disabled at age 50.
Thank you so much for bringing this serious subject to light. It may be too late for me, but perhaps the word can get out now that HRT is a very dangerous solution to women's problems.
I will be in touch with you again when I can gather all the information that I have accumulated over the years. Once again....THANK YOU!
J.J.

Subject: Re: Premarin

Thank you for your wonderful response. It makes me feel that I am not so "crazy". I have been practically screaming at the doctors for years that the hormones is what caused my health problems only to be dismissed and treated like a nut case.
I live in KY and the doctors here all belong to the "good old boys club". They are all friends, either attended The University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville. I did not take these hormones in one pill. I took the Premarin for 21 days and then started the Provera. The Premarin made me very nervous and disoriented, but I believe the Provera was what literally knocked me off my feet. The cyst on my ovary, which was there for 17 years and caused a great deal of pain, is gone. However getting rid of a pain in my side was certainly not worth the price I have paid.
I hope that if we scream loud enough about the health care women are receiving, perhaps something will be done about it. Good luck in your efforts,
J.J.

Subject: Premarin Scare

I was reading all the letters on your web site and here is my question - I am 55 years old and I was on PremPro for five years. I had a hysterectomy two weeks ago and was prescribed Premarin .3. I really didn't have any problems with PremPro, but the last year my legs have been cramping and I am tired all the time. Well, I filled the Premarin prescription and have taken it now for four days. My hot flashes are returning and my legs still hurt. I don't want to increase the Premarin because I am afraid of all I have read and Ithink I want to go on something natural. I read about DHEA, Cenestin, Estradiol, and Estriol. Will any of these help the hot flashes? If I discontinued the Premarin now will I have any problems? Should I continue to take PremPro and slowly get off that? Please let me know something.
Thank you,
A.H.

Subject: Thank You

I just recently stopped taking Premarin after 18 years. My doctor whom I saw 3 weeks ago told me about this new study and that with Premarin I have no chance of getting cancer with my long term use. He said I should take it every other day. When he got my blood work back he said liver, kidneys, heart and all were fine. In his hand written note he said to stop taking Premarin and I called him because first he said take what I had every other day until it was gone and he would enclose a new prescription for a lesser dose. However, when I got the letter, no new prescription was enclosed. I called his office and got the prescription but I haven't gotten it filled and thanks to the letters, I have just read, I won't ever get it filled. I have also had a breast exam and they found fibrous tissue. My doctor says that is normal in some women. Is this true?

Subject: Horses & Women Suffer Because of Premarin

Amidst the current scare with HRT and it's link to cancer, I decided to email TIME magazine requesting that they consider doing an article on how HRT is produced. I hope you don't mind, but I asked them to visit this website for more information. I hope this helps our cause in saving these precious lives. Women who are taking Premarin, Prempro, Premphase and Prempac aren't the only ones suffering! Personally, I'd rather suffer with hotflashes, brittle bones and wrinkly skin than to hurt an animal. God bless you and our horses. Thank you for your page!

Subject: Suffered Heart Attack after Two Yrs. on PremPro

Itook PremPro for approximately two years and experienced a heart attack on Jan 8, 2001 at the age of 52. There is no premature heart disease in my family. I have had mild hypertension since the age of 41, but am on medication to control it. After my heart attack, my physician came into my hospital room and told me to stop taking PremPro. At that time I didnt know that PremPro could have been the culprit, but have been doing much research on it ever since and feel that it may have indeed caused my heart attack. Also when I was in my mid 20's, I couldn't take the birth control pill, as it caused blood clots to form in my legs. I immediately stopped taking it as I did my research on PremPro. I found that it can cause blood clots in susceptible women which is what caused my heart attack. Are there any impending lawsuits re: PremPro? Should I try and seek compensation for this? Thank you for any advice.
P.S.

Ed. Comment: This is one of biggest problems - doctors not inquiring about a woman's past health history - obviously if a woman cannot take birth control pills because it caused blood clots to form in her legs she should never have been prescribed PremPro. I've stated many times on this web site that doctors have relied too heavily on the information and hype given them by the drug reps rather than doing their own research. Doctors have done a great diservice to women because of the heavy influence from drug companies, i.e. Wyeth-Ayerst.

Subject: Premarin, Blood Clot & TIA's
Hi, I've written before about Premarin and problems that my mother (she'll be 65 this year - if she survives this stuff) is having. My mother has been in and out of the hospital going through tests, I'm sure you know the routine. She had a similar blood clot to the lady who wrote the first letter for 1998 about Prempro. Same leg and practically the same length, same treatment. She is having TIA's and still experiences swelling in her leg, three clots are still there. Now just this week they have found 65% blockage in a cartoid artery on the left side of her neck, they are doing an angiogram next week because they think something is going on in her brain causing the continuing TIA's. I live in California and leave tomorrow morning to be with her in Texas for the week, its the last I'll be able to visit with her for a while. I hope it won't be the last. All I know is she has high blood pressure which I believe also was caused by the Premarin. Her health has gone completely downhill - she evidently had been having TIA's for several months but didn't know it was such a serious symptom. Now we just have to work with treatment. We are checking out chelation. Please pray for her and all those women who are traumatized by this deadly drug. Thanks for this site - I'm sure it will save lives - I know I've already passed the info on to all my friends. Lynn *************

I have been on hormone replacement therapy since I was 45. I am now 58, and in May of this year, I had a TIA. I am otherwise a healthy person, not overweight, etc. An MRI showed a severely narrowed middle cerebral artery. I am now a walking time bomb.

Subject: PREMARIN - High Blood Pressure, Weight Gain, etc.

Thank you for your web site I am a 51 year old who has been on the Premain for 29 years I never had high blood pressure until I started taking this pill I started out on 1.25 of Premarin and the 0.625 and now I am down to .3 I am getting off of this stuff after reading your web site I guess I have been extremely lucky that I haven't had more side affects. I have gained about 40lbs. in this 29 yr. period and I have awful mood swings. I have to take high blood pressure medication. Maybe after I get off of this stuff the high blood pressue will go a way. How safe is the natural hormone replacement? I was told by a doctor that the natural hormone had stuff in it that would cause cancer. How do we learn the truth about all of this stuff. I have awful hot flashes with out the HRT and I have been nervous ever since my ovaries were removed at the age of 22 with no reason - no cysts on them. I think that I had a knife happy doctor as I had normal periods. The only problems that I had were infections so the doctor said the only way to get rid of it was to do surgery how can a doctor live with him self after doing this to a woman so young please let me know if the natural HRT works. You may use my e-mail, thank you, Louise from Ark.

Ed. Comment: Removing a woman's ovaries at age 22 without any sound medical reason I feel is criminal- this doctor has no conscience whatsoever. Generally doctors will not encourage women to use natural products for hormone replacement therapy because they have not learned anything about them in school. One third of funding for medical school is provided by pharmaceutical companies. Therefore they have only been taught to prescribe pregnant mare's urine (Premarin or PremPro or one of the other horse urine products) and actually believe that is natural to use estrogen from waste products of another species for a woman instead of bio-identical estrogen and progesterone which totoally duplicates the hormones in a woman's body. Horse hormones are 10 times stronger than the natural occuring hormones in a woman's body and are responsible for all of the adverse side effects that women have reported such as: increased breast cancer, strokes, blood clots, heart attacks. Almost all of the studies on HRT have used some form of Premarin & a progestin (not natural progesterone) and compared it with a placebo, never comparing it to the natural type of estrogen such as estradiol, estrone, estriol, and progesterone that are bio-identical to a woman's own hormones. These bio-identical (natural to a woman's body) hormones are available by prescription from one of the many compounding pharmacies across the country. There are links on my website that explain natural hormone replacement therapy. Remifemin is derived from black cohosh and this has been used extensively in Europe for over 40 years with research to back it up as being safe and effective in treating menopause and hysterectomy symptoms. It finally became available in the U.S. in 1997 in all 50 states and is available in health food stores and some drug stores.

Subject: Over the counter HRT

I just finished reading your web-site and I'm astounded by all of the side-effects that women have had using Premarin, and PremPro. I wish I would have read these letters prior to having my prescription filled today. My OB/GYN prescribed PremPro for me today and I was a little reluctant to have it filled, in fact I questioned the pharmacist about it, indicating that cancer runs in my family and my mother died from brain cancer at the age of 41, but she wasn't much help. I'm 46 years of age and never expected to be menopausal at this young of age, but I need to do something. I don't experience any hot flashes, loss of sleep or vaginal dryness, but I have noticed a decreased interest in sex and I'm irritable and emotional (close to tears) a lot of the time. Is there any over-the-counter remedies that you know of. I would prefer to take natural products if possible. Right now I take a regime of vitamins everyday and have done so for several years now. I would appreciate any help you could provide. Thanks and keep up the good work on the web-site.

Subject: Looking For Celebrity to Expose Premarin Cruelty

Hello! I am an animal rights advocate from western NY state. I love your website about the evils of Premarin, including the cruelty to horses involved. Thank you so much for all of your efforts to educate the public on this issue. Do you happen to know if Mary Tyler Moore, or another celebrity-type person, ever travels to speak to groups about this issue? I have been interested in trying to arrange such an event for our animal rights group, but don't know where to start. Can you please offer me some suggestions? Again, cheers to you on your excellent web site! Thank you, and take care,

Subject: Weaning Off Premarin

Thank you for opening my eyes as well as others to the horrible, inhumane acts on horses. It is my own fault for not gathering information on Premarin, but 20 years ago I would not think of questioning my doctor. I have been on Premarin since 1980 following a partial hysterectomy. I asked a few times to get off or for something, else but I was told it was beneficial to me to stay on the medicine. WHAT A JOKE!! I am going to start weaning myself off of Premarin STARTING TODAY. I no longer go to that doctor (he retired) and I feel the one I am seeing now will agree entirely with me.  Again THANK YOU!!

Subject: Anxiety and Menapause

I have tried the traditional HRT and developed migraine headaches which are not so uncommon with these treatments. I switched to natural hormone treatment and continue to use a vaginal Premarin cream. My question is about anxiety. I have extreme anxiety, ringing in my ears which seems to be getting worse and a buzzing in my extremities. These symptoms are worse in the morning. I have seen a psychiatrist for months and traditional anti-anxiety treatments are of no use. Have you heard of any other women who experience this sort of symptom, and could the intravaginal cream several times a week, used for the vaginal dryness be causing such severe anxiety? Thank you for any help you might be able to give to me.

Subject: Gained 110 Pounds While On Premarin

For years I went back to my GYNO and was told that I was crazy...that having a hysterectomy and being on Premain absolutely would not cause any of the problems that I was experiencing. I even went to a shrink thinking that I was crazy. Today, and just 110 pounds heavier than when I had my hysterectomy and they started to medicate me, I still don't have answers....thank you for the info....I am now diabetic due to the weight gain and no matter what I do can't seem to get my life straightened out....so glad to hear that there are others out there who are experiencing the same problems that I have experienced over the past 20 years and that I am not crazy.

Subject: HRT Not A Cure-All

From my experience with HRT--I think that it is very harmful. I do know with my "burning mouth syndrome", and in talking to some doctors that were "aware" that very little is actually known about menopause. To prescribe HRT as a "cure-all" when they don't even know what they are trying to cure is inane, but it is also deadly. I do know an 80 year old plus woman who is dying of cancer who took HRT all of her post-menopausal years. Please remember my contact with you. If you learn of any medical movement to research menopause, and the post-menopausal period--PLEASE let me know. Sincerely,

I had a total hysterectomy 18 months ago. I am 43. I found your webpage after my surgery - when the HRT that was prescribed for me was not working and my physician refused to change it. I took Premarin for only a short time. Every day that I took it - I had severe stabbing pains in my right arm that felt like I had been punctured to the bone with a spear. My doctor told me the Premarin did not cause it and to continue taking it. Even after I told him that I read on a Premarin Message Board that other women had experienced these stabbing arm pains after taking Premarin, he STILL essentially, called me an idiot and said that the Premarin did not cause it. He also told me that Premarin mares live in a "virtual country club" for horses - so I decided then and there never to return to him. Women who have serious or even not so serious side effects to Premarin or PremPro can report them to the FDA themselves. The link is: www.fda.gov/medwatch.com Download the form, fill it out and mail it in. If enough of us who have suffered from these drugs send in complaint forms...maybe....the FDA will take notice. They cannot know - if we don't tell them. How about placing this info on your web site and let women know that they can file a report?
Thanks,
J.K.

Subject: Kidney Stones & Migraines While on Premarin

Hello: I have been on your website concerning Premarin. I had a total hysterectomy in March of 2000. I was 36 years old. I was immediately placed on Premarin 1.1. I started suffering from migraines, which I never had a history of. My doctor reduced my Premarin intake to .9 everyday. I still get the migraines occasionally. I have now started suffering from kidney stones. I have had two since I started taking the Premarin. I was wondering if there could be any connection to the Premarin and Kidney stones. I would appreciate your input. Thank you.

Subject: Stroke & Gallbladder Disease Due to Premarin

I have another Premarin nightmare to report. I was willing to accept the gallbladder I sacrificed to HRT but stopped when I had a stroke at age 54. Leading to the stroke, I had been on HRT for 7 years when I started to experience a percolating sensation in my chest. I went to doctors, biofeedback, and panic disorder groups to find the root of this anxiety, which followed me 24 hours a day. Finally, after the stroke and after the doctors advised me to continue on the HRT, I started to wean myself off. I went from 3/4 pill, to 1/2, to 1/4 over the course of a year. It was not until I stopped completely that the heaviness in my chest subsided completely. I no longer take HRT and regret that I ever did. My lesson was damage to my brain. Unfortunately, I have found no alternative to the hot flashes and sleeplessness and I need to find some protection for my bones. Otherwise, I feel fine, particularly free of the heaviness I felt in my chest for such a long time.

Subject: Could PremPro Have Caused Death?

My stepdaughter had meningitis when she was 15 years old and it left her brain damaged with a seisure disorder. She was currently taking lamictal I think and an additional medication. She started taking prempro because she had stopped ovulating. After doing a series of tests the doctors said her ovaries were as if she was in menopause and she hadn't menstruated in a year.
She was living in a group home and came to sleep over for Thanksgiving. I kissed her goodnight and in the morning we went to give her her 7am pills and she was dead. Probable cause of death is a seisure although we find this hard to beleive. They had to do an autopsy because she died at home suddenly. It's standard procedure in NY. Any additional information is greatly appreciated. Sharon

Subject: Hair Loss & Premarin

Any research done regarding hair loss and premarin. I just started this product 10 months ago and I am losing hair rapidly. I am extremely distressed about this and want to stop, but I'm not sure I can handle the side effects of menopause. I would very much appreciate a response regarding hair loss if you have this information. Thanks for your help.

Subject: Many Aches and Pains After Starting Premarin

Hello,
Thanks for the informative web site! To say I was completely appalled I happened upon your page regarding Premarin, would be putting it mildly! I, as well as the millions of other women who have been force-fed estrogen replacement hormones such as Premarin, have been in the dark regarding the many serious side effects they have caused. Just as horrifying is the cruel and inhumane method by which this drug is produced. I was unaware of the fact that Premarin was made from pregnant horses urine! Seeing the photos of these mistreated animals actually made me cry.

I was first prescribed this drug when I was 43 and began having symptoms of an early menopause. My symptoms were pretty severe. I didn't want to take estrogen therapy, but unwillingly went along with my doctor's recommendations to start taking Premarin. At the same time, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I had stiffness and soreness in the joints, memory loss, irritability, fibrofog, periodic depression, fatigue and many other symptoms. I have wanted to try life without Premarin, thinking that it may be the root cause of my problems, especially with Fibromyalgia. I have had worrisome problems as of late that I think are caused by the hormones which include extreme tenderness and pain in the joints, especially my knees. I also am having heart palpitations now and then, especially when I have even one glass of wine or other alcoholic beverages. Do you think this may be caused by the Premarin? My doctor tells me that it is my choice if I wanted to try an alternative therapy such as natural products. But, he still feels that they are not as effective as Premarin. I have heard him tout the benefits of the drug's protection from osteoporosis (which my mother had a severe case of), and ovarian cancer. This scared me into continuing using the drug.

I have had such strong thoughts lately that I should discontinue the Premarin, and since visiting your web site, have definitely decided not to take them any more. How do I wean myself from the Premarin? I have been on this drug for 6 years. I want to try a natural method. I have heard of progesterone creams that are all natural. What are your thoughts on that? Something is telling me to get away from the Premarin. My intuition has never failed me yet! What alternative methods can you suggest? What in your experience are the most effective and safe natural drugs/therapies? Please advise me as soon as possible. I wish you continued success in your endeavors to eliminate these monster drugs from being dispensed as if they were candy, without regard of the impact they are having on us women. We need women like yourself, who will educate and keep us informed about our most precious asset - our physical health and mental well being! Thank You! Vera

{Ed. Note:} I have posted stories such as those above since May of 1997 (when I first started my website The Truth About) and these sad and tragic stories continue into 2002. I would like to urge women to become their own best health advocate by keeping current with all of the latest studies that are published regarding HRT. Many of these studies are revealing that HRT actually is not as beneficial as was originally thought to be. Unfortunately, doctors are greatly influenced by the drug companies to continue prescribing HRT and doctors don't have the time or don't take the time to do their own research. They rely on the information they receive from the drug companies who are getting rich at the expense of women's health and lives. One of the main reasons for starting HRT was prevention of heart disease, this has not been the case, indeed a July 2001 study reported not only did HRT not prevent future heart attacks in women who already had heart disease, there was a 50% increase of heart attacks in the group on HRT compared to those on a placebo. Additionally, there were three times as many blood clots in the HRT group and a significant increase in gallbladder disease.
