Emile Berliner, inventor of the gramophone, visited The Gramophone Company Ltd. in the spring of 1900 and was awestruck by the painting of Nipper and the gramophone. He returned to Washington with the painting and began using the design on May 24, 1900. Mr. Berliner seemed to have the total market for his invention of the disc record and now the perfect logo to sell his product. Emile Berliner was a brilliant inventor. In 1881, Emile and his brother, Joseph founded the J. Berliner Telephone Fabrik in Europe. On May 16, 1888, he demonstrated an instrument he proclaimed the “Gramophone” at the Franklin Institute. A feature of the gramophone was the process he called “Voice Etching.”

A BRILLIANT MARKETING STRATEGY WAS TO PROMOTE THE NIPPER TRADEMARK AS A THREE DIMENSIONAL PAPIER MACHE FIGURE IN DEALER STORES. THE OLD KING COLE PAPIER MACHE CO. WAS VITAL IN PROVIDING NIPPER FIGURES OF VARIOUS SIZES.
The Company operated in Stark County since 1907. Old King Cole Papier Mache Co. is the merger of three papier-mâché companies, oldest dating back to 1887. The three original companies were the National Papier Mache Works of Clinton, Iowa; the Milwaukee Papier Mache Works; and the Western Papier Mache Works of Denver, Colo. The three companies were merged by Charles F. Cole in about 1906, and concentrated at Clinton, Iowa. The company was moved to Canton, Ohio in 1907 through the inducements of the Canton Board of Trade. At the time of moving it was the only company of its kind in the United States, and there were only six other similar companies in the world. It already won fame with its mammoth papier-mâché animals at the World’s Fair in 1893. The company brought a train load of 3,000 molds, and a skeleton organization of 10 or 12 persons when it came to Canton. Thirty to forty other employees were added locally when the company moved into the Aultman plant at 920 S. Market.
NIPPER IS A VERY COLLECTIBLE PUP,
BUT DON'T BE FOOLED BY A MODERN FANTASY ITEM.

This little 7" high Nipper bank has a rusted finish to look old. He has glass eyes and has a side screw to disassemble for coin removal. He sold for $17.50 in the Norman’s Gift Catalog of 1997. This is one Nipper which has fooled many novice collectors. He is a new pup that has been given a rusted look that has the appearance of an old patina.

THE VICTOR COMPANY WAS ALWAYS READY TO HELP DEALERS PROMOTE SALES BY PROMINENTLY DISPLAYING ITS PRODUCTS.

The July 15, 1922 issue of The Talking Machine World advertised this exhibition showcase as “Something You Can See Through!” They asked the Victor dealers not to keep their needle tins hidden on the back shelf or under the counter. Instead, they suggested that the needle tins be displayed in a beautiful, attractive, sure-shot selling display. The price of this display was $3.00. How could any Victor dealer be without this ideal exhibition showcase? The Victor trademark is displayed in full color on the front and ends of the case and across the face appear the words “Look for this trademark on all Victor products.” The case has room for a complete stock of Victor Needles.
THROUGH THE YEARS, SEVERAL COMPANIES MANUFACTURED THE LIKENESS OF NIPPER USING A VARIETY OF MATERIALS.

The cutest stuffed Nippers were manufactured by the Schwartz Toy Mfg. Corp., Brooklyn 32, N.Y. The buckled collar has metal silver studs and the contents tag says “NIPPER Radio Corp of America.” They were offered free in the New York City area to every customer who purchased an RCA black and white portable television set in the 1960’s. The big Nipper measures 24" and the little guy measures 9".

NIPPER'S PAL, CHIPPER FOUND MANY FRIENDS IN A NEW GENERATION OF ENTERTAINMENT SEEKERS.

To be “cool,” teens were wearing a headset playing the latest songs of the new millennium. This AM/FM stereo headset radio was marketed by Thomson Consumer Electronics Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana. This headset radio has a detachable belt clip and stereo headphones. It operates on two “AAA” batteries. Chipper was the newest logo for RCA with his senior pal Nipper.
