The "big three" in telecommunications are still AT&T, Sprint, and MCI. (as of this writing) WorldCom used to be number four. But MCI/WorldCom have merged. And by the time you read this, Sprint/MCI may have merged. Excel Communications is popular with some in network marketing, but they don't offer the best rates, have pathetic commissions, and charge expensive "signup" fees if you want to earn commissions. Hundreds of other carriers and resellers market a variety of telecommunication services. Rates have definitely fallen, but confusion has increased dramatically. And it will get even worse as the competition for "local service" heats up. You may call the following toll-free number at anytime to verify your long distance carrier: 1-700-555-4141. This only tells you who the carrier is for the line you are calling from. If you have more than one line (telephone number), you need to call from each line individually.
Calculating your REAL rate per minute is easy. Just look at a recent phone bill, pick a few representative calls, and divide the cost of the call by the call duration, to get cost/min.
