Understand that ALL SUCCESSFUL companies, of any kind, go through several phases.  The three most commonly talked about are ‘Formulation’, ‘Momentum’, and ‘Plateau’.  If they make it through ‘Formulation’ they may go into ‘Momentum’.  Eventually that stage of rapid growth fades and they enter into ‘Plateau’, where there still may be some growth, but it’s not as rapid.

Each of these stages can last from months to years.  Determining which stage a company is in (or where they’re going) at any given time is subject to interpretation.  Companies that don’t have proper management or financial backing may go from ‘momentum’ to ‘crash’ very quickly.

1) Type of Company:

There are three basic types of companies in Network Marketing.  BEFORE getting involved, you should understand if the company you are considering is:

      A) Internal Consumption,
      B) Marketing Plan Driven, or
      C) PRODUCT DRIVEN.

Internal Consumption are usually large, well-established companies who've been around for a long time, 8 -10 years or more.   If you’ve heard the name before or recognize it immediately, it's quite possibly an ‘Internal Consumption’ company.  These companies have probably already gone through their ‘momentum’ phase, where the biggest fortunes are made, and are most likely in the ‘plateau’ phase.

Sure, they may be adding some new distributors and customers.  And they can probably even produce some statistics that make it look like they’re growing.

But for the most part they depend on their large customer/membership base to purchase product offerings, and have SEVERAL drawbacks for NEW distributors.   A few possibilities are: LIMITED GROWTH POTENTIAL, outdated or poor compensation plan, too many products (confusing to new people), and negative opinions already formulated (right or wrong) by people who've already heard of the company.   These problems, and the lack of excitement created with anything new, make it more difficult for NEW DISTRIBUTORS to build a thriving or growing business.

Marketing Plan Driven companies, were common in the 1980's until government regulations shut them down.  Unfortunately they still come and go all the time, usually emphasizing their "huge commissions", "get rich quick and easy", or "we'll do it all for you" mentality.  There are new suckers born every day and "MLM junkies" who never seem to learn.  As long as the LOTTERY MENTALITY is common in society, and naïve or greedy people seek a way to "get something for nothing", crooks and con artists will think up new versions of old ideas to steal people's money.  Their focus is almost always more on all the money you can make, rather than on good, quality, effective, PRODUCTS.

Programs with "Binary" and "Matrix" compensation plans are often 'Marketing Plan Driven', and are usually avoided by serious networkers because of well documented problems and poor LONG TERM potential

REAL GROWTH POTENTIAL AND LONG-TERM RESIDUAL INCOME,

Product Driven
companies are the only ones to seriously consider!

By offering unique but high-demand, high-quality, value-priced, CONSUMABLE products or services, they help distributors earn fortunes and lifelong residual income.  The key is to pick the RIGHT company and get involved after the ‘formulation phase’, but early enough to benefit from the growth curve most exceptional companies go through once they hit ‘momentum’.

Unfortunately it's not always easy to distinguish between 'Product Driven' and 'Marketing Plan Driven' companies.  Some 'Marketing Plan' driven companies try to hide behind popular products.

If a distributor or company places a lot more emphasis on the compensation plan, on the EASY MONEY, or the ‘do everything for you system’, than on the quality of the products, it's a good bet it may be a 'Marketing Plan' driven program.

That's not to say that the compensation plan and good SYSTEMS are not important, because they are. We’ll cover more on that later.


2) Strong Leadership / Financially Sound / Long Term Plan / Ethical Standards:

This category should be at the top of anybody’s list, even though the COMBINATION of several factors is what separates the VERY BEST companies from the rest of the pack.

This can be a difficult area to get enough FACTS to HONESTLY evaluate a given company.  But it is a critical area overlooked by many who end up sorry later.  QUALITY and INTEGRITY are important for LONG-TERM SUCCESS.

Leaders of the company should have a squeaky-clean track record, a successful MLM business background, and high ethical standards.   Too many MLM companies are started by 'high-flying' networkers who have no real idea how to run and manage a successful business, and no real interest in their customers or distributors.   Others are started by people who have a previous track record of run-ins with the law.   That's NOT a good foundation to build your financial future on.

Does the company you are considering make it easy to re-order, BOTH online and off-line?   And do they deliver products (and commission checks) in a timely fashion?   Do they have a track record for terminating successful distributors without just cause just to increase their own cash flow?   Yes, things like that do happen even in well-known companies.   And if they do, sooner or later it will negatively impact your business and income.

(At the time of this writing there is a Distributor’s Rights Association (DRA) website, and at least two or three other websites available that provide very good, objective information about the industry, and things happening with specific companies.   If you have an interest, contact me directly for those URL’s.)

The company mission statement should reflect a sincere interest in helping people improve their lives and making this world a better place to live.   That may sound corny if all you can think of is money.   But too many (unsuccessful) people make poor choices because they focus only on money.   If you focus on helping others, the financial rewards will fall into place almost automatically.

No mission statement, poor mission statement, or insincere?   Move on if you don't want to get burned.

The company should be debt-free and have a business plan and management in place capable of handling tremendous growth.   Many companies with great ideas or products have failed because they weren't prepared for and couldn't handle the tremendous growth that often occurs.   Others fail because of poor leadership or poor management from the start, no ethical standards, or no REAL long-term plan or mission statement.   Any one of these negative factors is reason to look elsewhere.

While indirect and not always obvious, a poor compensation plan that favors the company over the customers or distributors can also negatively impact the ‘integrity’ score I would give a company.   A great compensation plan is very important for many reasons we’ll cover in a moment.


3) Great "CONSUMABLE" Products / Repeat or Regular Use / Reasonable Price:

What's the best Product Industry?   Almost any product you can think of has been marketed through network marketing or MLM.   But only a small percentage have had LONG-TERM SUCCESS.   While it's important to be interested and believe in your product, many people miss out on a great opportunity because they ignore or refuse to consider market demand or TRENDS in society, and what TYPE of industry best fits the network marketing business model.

Successful people RECOGNIZE and CAPITALIZE on TRENDS in society.   And if you’re lucky or smart enough to place yourself in front of MULTIPLE trends, your success can be magnified.   There are several simultaneous trends occurring right now, that make this the best time ever to get involved in network marketing.   Millions of Baby Boomers are approaching retirement age and are concerned with their health and financial situation.   Many have not saved enough to retire comfortably.   Others would like to retire early.   Combine this with the lack of 'job security' and dissatisfaction in corporate America, the high cost of fuel and frustrations with commuting, and there’s an exploding interest in operating a legitimate and successful home based business.

Technological advancements like computers and the Internet also continue to simplify the process, making it possible to run an International business from home, from the beach, or on the go almost ANYWHERE in the world.

There's a growing demand for "in home" shopping, and an almost insatiable appetite for TOP QUALITY Nutritional supplements and ANTI-AGING products.

These areas are the undisputed king of the home based business and network marketing industries and are already multi-billion dollar industries with plenty of growth ahead.   You don’t have to get a very big share of that market to make significant income.

This area offers a HUGE target market, very good growth potential, and an exceptional long-term outlook.   These products also naturally build customer LOYALTY, something difficult to do with most ‘telecom’ and ‘technology’ price-based products.

The only potential downside is there's LOTS OF COMPETITION!   And if products become very popular, discount chains often find ways to offer ‘knock off products’ at lower prices, oftentimes of inferior quality.   This makes it more difficult to keep customers (and residual income) forever.   So if you choose this category from a business perspective, it's even more important to apply the concepts outlined in this report, and make sure you have some UNIQUE, EFFECTIVE, and PATENTED products.

Some people mistakenly dismiss the health & wellness industry for a variety of reasons.   And while it's true there are lots of 'overpriced', 'gimmick', and 'me too' products on the market, those will never build long term residual income.   But there are many high quality products too.   And that's why it's important to look at more than JUST quality products if you're serious about a better-than-average income.   From a business perspective the WHOLE PICTURE is important.

There are many companies with good products who find loyal distributors to build a solid customer base.   And if you're satisfied with average success, there are many companies that can fit the bill.   But the key to LONG TERM SUCCESS and ABOVE AVERAGE INCOME is to find a company with OUTSTANDING products, a **VERY SPECIAL** compensation plan, GREAT growth potential, and some of the other things we discuss here.

QUALITY PRODUCTS, offered at reasonable prices, that produce noticeable results, practically sell themselves and keep people re-ordering.   That's one of the simple keys to success in this business - people re-ordering and using your products month after month, year after year.   That's what keeps your checks coming in!   If your products are overpriced or ineffective, people quit ordering, your paychecks shrivel or dry up, and the goal of LONG TERM PASSIVE RESIDUAL INCOME never materializes.

While we're talking about products, HOW MANY products should a great company offer?   The simple answer is not too many, and not too few.   While it's important to have a "sizzle" or flagship product that attracts attention, it's also important to have enough other QUALITY products for customers to choose from.

No one product will be right for everyone.   And while anything "new" can create some temporary excitement, most companies with only one hot product end up disappearing as quickly as they came on the scene.   I would never bet my long term financial future on the back of one product, especially a relatively new one.

At the other end of the spectrum, too many products can be confusing to new customers and distributors, making it harder to stay focused, and making it more difficult to maintain high quality and uniqueness throughout the product line.

The BEST companies have several individual products that an entire business could be built on, and a broad enough base to appeal to a wide range of interests.

One of the reasons for the success of the health and nutrition industry is the LOYALTY people develop to products that positively impact their health.   Contrast that to another popular industry - Telecom - where there’s even more competition, decisions are primarily price-based, and people will switch companies to save a penny.

Using those same industries for comparison, there's also more profit margin in the health industry, another positive from a business standpoint.

Does the business you are considering offer a product or service that naturally builds customer LOYALTY?   And is there real profit potential, while still giving the consumer fair value for their dollar?


4) Compensation Plan - HONEST / Fair / Simple:

When this report was first written in the late 1990's I was just starting my Network Marketing career.   I wrote it after studying the industry for several months, and have since revised it.   Initially I put 'compensation plan' number seven on my list because I believed most GOOD companies had fairly good compensation plans.   But since then it's become OBVIOUS that a GREAT compensation plan can make all the difference between failure and MEGA-SUCCESS in this business - both for the part-time new person and for the experienced full-time professional.

Some of the more recent 'REPRESENTATIVE FRIENDLY' compensation plans are the wave of the future and critical for LONG TERM success. While many established companies and distributors are deliberately fighting the trend (obviously for their own personal benefit), 'REPRESENTATIVE FRIENDLY' compensation plans can make a dramatic difference in your business! Many people who've struggled or failed in the past are amazed at the difference when they find the RIGHT company with a 'REP FRIENDLY' compensation plan.

By 'REP FRIENDLY' I'm referring in general to compensation plans that reward everyone FAIRLY, reward people for “retailing” products, and pay "generational overrides" into the deepest levels.  Many older compensation plans have hidden "breakaways", where distributors get robbed when someone in their downline does well or gets a promotion.  Other plans like binaries that require "balancing" of legs to receive all the commissions you deserve, are designed to benefit the company, not the hard working distributor.

A good compensation plan is relatively easy for newcomers to understand, and rewards both the newcomer and the dedicated pro for helping and teaching others how to do the business. It doesn't cheat anybody, like many plans do. Some companies build their whole business around a compensation plan designed to attract the greedy "get rich quick & easy" crowd. They come and go every day. Others create features that secretly rob distributors of their fair share. But fairness, high ethical standards, and real long-term value will stand the test of time.

Many people who get involved with a company primarily because of the products fail to properly evaluate the compensation plan. That is a BIG MISTAKE from a BUSINESS STANDPOINT. If you're just a customer, your main concern is the quality and pricing of the products. But if and when you start considering building a BUSINESS, the compensation plan is VERY IMPORTANT.

Many companies with good products have poor compensation plans that favor the company over the distributor. Many distributors never discover this until it's too late, and they have to waste time defending or rationalizing their compensation plan because they've already built a business and it's hard to leave or admit the TRUTH.

In the long run, EVERYBODY benefits from a FAIR compensation plan.

Although this business is about producing LONG TERM residual income, the average person has to be able to produce income or profit relatively quickly in order to stay in business long enough to reap the long-term benefits. When people see results right away (from the products and pay plan) they stay involved.

There’s a trend already established in Europe that some experts predict will soon be the ‘norm’ for successful companies everywhere. That is WEEKLY commissions. There are obvious benefits to distributors. But from a company standpoint it can create some problems, especially if your program wasn’t designed that way from the beginning.

In the past, weekly payouts have often been associated with questionable opportunities. But some mainstream, top quality companies are beginning to embrace the concept.

With the RIGHT company, legitimate tax deductions can create an IMMEDIATE INCREASE in your cash flow even before your business earns a dime. This is an important aspect overlooked by many people.

In the U.S.A. Uncle Sam will actually pay you (give you great tax breaks) to start the right business as long as you INTEND to make a profit. And for anybody working a regular J.O.B., this can amount to hundreds of dollars a month starting IMMEDIATELY.

There are many complicated pay plans designed for different purposes. You can argue forever which one is best. Each one has unique advantages and disadvantages, and most have been developed by people much smarter than I am, with a specific purpose in mind. The five most common (in alphabetical order) are some type of: Binary, Breakaway, Matrix, Two-up, and Unilevel. Newer companies may use some combination to produce a more 'REP FRIENDLY' plan.

Be HONEST WITH YOURSELF before you get involved. Are you just looking to supplement your income with a little extra money or get your products at a lower net cost or ‘free’? Or are you serious about making substantial full-time income or achieving financial independence?

The HONEST ANSWER to that question may influence the company and compensation plan YOU CHOOSE.

In my opinion, the FAIREST and BEST plan for most 'average' people who are just looking for some part-time income, is some variation of a compressed or modified unilevel with a good percentage payout near the TOP in the first 2-4 levels. This allows you to see early rewards for your efforts, and from a place where you're most likely to have the most influence - your first few levels.

Most networkers serious about MEGA-BUCKS want to see more rewards in the deeper levels. A lot of it depends on how committed you are to LONG TERM success and how hard you're willing to work to build a thriving organization.

Despite illustrations to the contrary, the reality is that only a small percentage of networkers build DEEP organizations with downlines in the thousands (Ask for my article on "REVERSE GEOMETRIC GROWTH" to understand this problem and its catastrophic results on theoretical compensation illustrations.)

But with the RIGHT program and RIGHT comp plan you don't have to build a huge organization to make a decent part-time income, or even a SUBSTANTIAL full-time income. If EVERYBODY gets rewarded fairly, the dream of LONG TERM, passive residual income and TIME FREEDOM can be achieved by everyone who wants it badly enough to put out a little effort.

Theoretical compensation illustrations never work exactly the same way in real life because of human nature.  What percentage of people keep their New Years resolutions, marriage vows,  and numerous other commitments and promises?   I’m told less than 50%.  So yes, some people will drop out.  But if your products are good enough, a reasonable number of customers will stay for years.

Most types of "binary", "spillover" and "matrix" plans attract too many of the "get something for nothing" crowd. That will hurt your business in the long run. Very few have had any LONG TERM SUCCESS. And LONG TERM passive residual income is one of the main benefits to the RIGHT network marketing opportunity.

It's amazing how many people jump into a program, with NO IDEA how much they are REALLY going to be paid! It's great to love your products. But if you're serious about success with a BUSINESS, it's important to understand the true income potential based on reality, not hypothetical illustrations.

True potential can best be calculated using actual "average commissions/rep" (ACR) numbers. You won't find many networkers who understand or are willing to talk about this concept.  In fact, in corresponding with hundreds of reps from many different companies, and reading lots of published information, I’ve never seen or heard anyone else talk about or mention this concept.

5) Direct Upline Support / Training / Assistance:

This is a critical area, especially if you are new, or have tried before but have not had the success you hoped for. HONESTY, INTEGRITY, and SINCERITY are important qualities in your upline. A good sponsor will take an interest in you. But they will also tell you what you NEED to hear, not always what you WANT to hear, and will be willing to work with you if you need support until you develop a little basic knowledge and self-confidence. Learning anything new can be uncomfortable for awhile.

Initially did they ask questions about what's important TO YOU?   Or did they just try to "sell" you on why their program is better than all the rest, before they even knew anything about you and what you might be looking for?

Many networkers with the "get rich quick & easy" mentality never seem to grasp the importance of adequate support and training for LONG-TERM SUCCESS. They make lots of empty promises, but fail to deliver once they've got you signed up. They mistakenly think this is just a "numbers " game, and focus strictly on recruiting to keep replacing all the people dropping out of their organization. The best organizations are built one person at a time But some people who've achieved great success themselves, don't always have the time, ability, or willingness to teach their skills to or help others.

Network marketing done right is NOT a sales business! It’s a teaching, coaching, and mentoring business. Personal development plays a big roll. And if you can find a good personal mentor or TEAM, it can have a HUGE positive impact on your level of success. And if you choose the right company, then truly focus on HELPING OTHERS, the money will fall into place all by itself.

Lack of good coaching or mentoring is one of several reasons there's such a high turn-over in MLM, and one of the main reasons many people are constantly looking for a 'better' opportunity. THIS IS A T.E.A.M. SPORT! - Together Everybody Achieves More. Working TOGETHER is one of the things that gives this business model it's awesome power. Many people (in ALL COMPANIES) fail to recognize that fact.

6) Good Sales Aids / Literature / Marketing Method / Duplicatable SYSTEM:

This is another area many people fail to consider before jumping in. Many businesses with a good idea or product have failed due to lack of a good marketing plan. And conversely, many inferior products are marketed successfully (at least short-term) because of a great marketing plan. Marketing Plan and Compensation Plan are NOT the same, even though many networkers in ‘Marketing Plan Driven’ companies use the term interchangeably. You need both quality products and a good marketing plan for LONG-TERM SUCCESS.

In Network Marketing a Duplicatable System is also critical. That's why franchises became so popular in their hey-day. They offered a turn-key, duplicatable system that increases your chances for success. Unfortunately few people can afford the high start-up costs and dedication required to stick with a franchise for the SEVERAL YEARS it usually takes to hit the "break-even" point. And to their dismay, even many who 'succeed' with a franchise often find that they've just invested in another time-consuming J.O.B.! Th e RIGHT network marketing company can provide you a rewarding career to be proud of, without many of the high expenses, hassles, and complications of a conventional business or franchise.

People are not duplicatable but good SYSTEMS are. A good network marketing opportunity offers Duplicatable Systems much like a franchise, but without the high start-up costs. And today there's no excuse not to have a GREAT SYSTEM, whether or not your primary company provides one. There are several very good GENERIC systems available, some for FREE, that are much better than many company systems. And some can be tailored for specific companies or industries.

Some do a great job of presenting a compelling audio/visual 'Flash Presentation' to your prospects about the benefits of a home business.  And some will even do an automated online interview for you. Some include automatic lead generation and contact management systems, and can even create a secondary stream of income. They can save you a lot of time and money so you can focus your efforts on the most important aspects of building your business. Since this area of the business is constantly evolving, contact me directly if you'd like to know my current favorites.

Good sales aids (print, audio, video, and Internet) help portray a professional image and hopefully help educate and motivate prospects so the amount of "selling" required by individual distributors is minimized.   Most people HATE TO SELL or ‘be sold’!   When done properly, this business is not about selling. It's about SORTING - finding the right people, and providing good information to them. In fact being a good LISTENER or OBSERVER, is a more valuable asset than being a good talker. No matter what your product or service, this is ultimately a people business. And developing your communication and 'people skills' is an important aspect many unsuccessful distributors ignore.

Sales aids should generally NOT be commissionable. The products are what you should ultimately be marketing and distributors should be provided sales aids at the lowest possible cost. Commissionable sales aids artificially inflate the cost of doing business, and may be an indication of a lower quality opportunity.


7) Growth Potential / "Ground Floor" / Established / Track Record:

This is an often misunderstood concept. Most people think growth potential and track record are inversely related. Many consider companies with an established track record to have limited growth potential. That's why so many "new" companies are pitching "ground-floor opportunity" every year. But statistics prove that the vast majority of the thousands of NEW companies who start in MLM fail within a couple years, OR LESS!   Are those the kind of odds you want to bet your financial future on?

Network Marketing's true potential is LONG-TERM SUCCESS, not "get rich quick". No matter how "great" the product, no matter how "high" the compensation plan, if the company goes out of business, you've wasted a lot of time and sometimes money. Ideally a company will have been in business at least two years, so you can better evaluate it's true potential. With the RIGHT COMPANY, there's still plenty of room for growth and a much better chance for LONG-TERM SUCCESS.Otherwise, you're just taking a high risk gamble. The odds are stacked against you!   Smart successful networkers run the other way as fast as they can whenever they hear the terms  “groundfloor” or “pre-launch”.

Learn from the mistakes of others. It's a lot easier and faster than making them all yourself. Most of us who’ve had above average success have tried a 'new' or 'groundfloor' opportunity at least once in our network marketing career. Even in the rare and unlikely event that a new company does survive the ‘formulation’ phase, which can last for years, the changes, hassles, and problems in the early years are rarely worth the extra effort required.

Remember, we're trying to build LONG TERM RESIDUAL INCOME. If the company is not going to still be a good opportunity a year, or two, or five, down the road, it's probably not worth investing your time or money in now.

On the other hand, a company that's been around for many years and already has a hundred thousand distributors or more, may have less growth potential no matter how good their products are. Every situation is different, but you should consider ALL the factors involved. The ideal is to find a happy medium that tips the RISK vs. REWARD scale in YOUR favor - young enough for good growth potential, stable enough that they should be around for years to come.


8) Cost To Join:

Generally the lower the cost the better. Obviously the lower the cost, the more people you have as potential prospects. However low cost does not always attract high quality. Not everyone is a good prospect to become an independent distributor or business partner. And one reason for failure in MLM is it's so easy to get in… and it's just as easy to quit.

On the other hand, people who've invested their life savings to start a conventional business don't usually quit so easily.

One fairly well kept secret is that a GOOD network marketing business offers MORE NET INCOME POTENTIAL and FREEDOM than most conventional businesses, at a FRACTION of the investment of time and money. That topic is covered in more detail in my “Understanding the Three Pillars of Success” article.

Some good companies can be joined for next to nothing. I know a couple that are ABSOLUTELY FREE. No matter what the cost, treat your business like you've invested your life savings! Make sure you know what you're getting for your money, and what the refund policy is.

Generally you're better investing in some product and marketing materials than in overpriced "sign-up fees". Some companies need high sign-up fees to pay their distributors because they can't make enough from the normal commission structure. You have to be a great salesperson or con-artist to succeed with this type of program. Most people are not (and don't want to be) good at "selling", so these programs never produce LONG TERM passive residual income.

If you're a good salesperson there are LOTS of ways to make a decent income, and many of them are faster than network marketing. Every business on the planet can use a good salesperson. And SHORT TERM, many of them can make you more money initially than network marketing. So if you’re a good salesperson and are looking for a ‘quick buck’, go get a sales J.O.B. selling cars, furniture, jewelry, or some other product with a high profit margin.  But if you’re willing to make a paradigm shift, and use your people skills to help others, you can produce much better LONG TERM results and rewards with the RIGHT network marketing opportunity.

Network marketing is about building LONG TERM PASSIVE RESIDUAL INCOME that can set you free for life. It’s also about building relationships and friendships with wonderful people that make it DOUBLY REWARDING. It's NOT about 'selling'. For the most part sales skills are NOT DUPLICATABLE. Duplicatability is an important feature in any successful network marketing opportunity.

Most good network marketing businesses can be started with an initial investment under $500. Some very good ones can be started for under $100! Anyone who can't come up with $100 - $300 to get a business started may not want it bad enough and may not be a good candidate for having their own business. Too many people who've made bad choices for years and are in a financial predicament, mistakenly hope that a "get something for nothing" business opportunity will solve all their problems. It will not.

On the other hand, HARD WORK and COMMITMENT can make up for lack of money to invest. And there are many true ‘rags to riches’ stories when someone with the right ATTITUDE and DESIRE was fortunate enough to connect with the right TEAM or mentor who helped them get off on the right foot. So if lack of money is the only thing holding you back, but you have plenty of desire and are ‘coachable’, your chances of success are very good if you find the right mentor or TEAM to work with.

If money is a problem, but you’re gainfully employed, look into the legal tax breaks that can create IMMEDIATE additional income from your current employer. In some cases Uncle Sam will GIVE you enough to help get your business off the ground. Ask me for a simple summary of the TOP FIVE tax deductions (in the U.S.A.)  There are other creative ways to come up with enough money to get a good business started.

I'd be suspicious of any network marketing business that cost more than $400 - $500 to get started, including products and marketing materials. As I mentioned before, some very good ones can be started for under $100.

Steer clear of all the “gifting” SCAMS, and the "deals" that ask for $1,000 - $5,000 'investments', and pay huge up front commissions. Not only will you likely lose your money, but the ‘feds’ may be looking to throw you in jail! There are many versions of these “money games” where no legitimate product changes hands. They’re almost always illegal and eventually get shut down. When the owners and top distributors can be tracked down, they often end up in jail.

There are many scams and rip-off artists in the home business industry that use great sales pitches to separate people from their money. The only people who benefit temporarily from these scams are the con-artists who are talented enough to "sell" these ideas to naive or greedy people. If you're considering investing more than $500, consult with a successful business person YOU KNOW first, or be sure to check out one of the SCAM-BUSTER websites. I can provide a couple if you don’t know where to look.

Also be aware of any hidden costs required for additional marketing materials or required training. Some programs require you to be 'licensed' or attend sales classes that you have to pay for, and that is not always disclosed up front.

If you remember one thing from this article, remember that SUCCESSFUL network marketing is NOT a sales business. It’s a PEOPLE and RELATIONSHIP business where HELPING OTHERS is your primary objective.  If you do it right, the LONG TERM rewards can be substantial.

If you have a product or service you'd like to share with your 'warm' or 'local' market, you can do that for almost no cost. But it will take an investment of more time. And most ‘friends & family’ are not typically receptive to a ‘business opportunity’. There are many FREE or low cost ways to find good prospects for good products or a good business.

Another cost consideration in most network marketing programs is minimum required product volume to get paid. Almost ALL companies require active distributors to purchase product each month to qualify for a paycheck. And that just makes good business sense. This can vary from under $50 to over $300. Again, lower minimums make it easier for more people to qualify for and receive a paycheck. The more people who receive a paycheck, the stronger your organization will become.

Make sure the company does not have unreasonable purchase requirements for you to qualify for higher paychecks.

Some people who don't understand the MLM or Network Marketing business model balk at "having" to purchase products to get paid. But if you're not willing to use or market your own products each month, why should anyone else?   If you don't REALLY believe your product or service can help others, you shouldn't be in the business. You should probably look for another company, a "regular J.O.B.", or another source of income.

Along those lines, one good question to ask yourself is:   "If there were no business opportunity involved, would I still buy this product or service?"   If the answer is NO, you should look elsewhere, even if other people are having great success with this particular business.


9) Most Important: YOU!

Successful people in all walks of life have a PASSION for what they do. If you can find something you are passionate about and meets the above criteria, YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL. If you have an open mind, a strong desire to succeed, a positive attitude, and are willing to work and to learn, you can make your dreams come true!

On the other hand, if you're just looking to "get rich quick" or have what I call the "slot machine" or "lottery" mentality, hoping you can just stick a few coins in and have it start spitting back a fortune, you're setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. No matter what the product or service, this is a PEOPLE business. And all SUCCESSFUL networkers have worked to improve their communication and 'people' skills.

You also should decide if you're looking for a part-time HOBBY or a serious BUSINESS. There's a big difference! There's nothing wrong with doing network marketing as a hobby. And most people have to start out part-time, finding a few extra hours a week to invest. But know going in what you really want. Too many people want the income of a serious business, but treat their network marketing business like a hobby. They usually end up disappointed.

If you want the kind of success most people dream of, you have to treat it like a BUSINESS, even if you’re only working it part-time. That means dedication, commitment, and hard work to learn something new. But you should also have some FUN! Although some people achieve success relatively quickly, for most part-timers, it usually takes several months to a year or two of part-time effort for most 'average people' to start having significant success. But the rewards can last a lifetime and for generations to come, IF YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT BUSINESS!

There is no perfect company and EVERYTHING has pros and cons. You frequently run a balancing act among different features. That's why it's so important to lay out YOUR sequence of preferences BEFORE you start making comparisons.

The same is true in this business. You have to 'climb the hill' (learn the business) before you can 'coast'. Many people learn to enjoy the process of becoming better people, helping others, and improving much more than just the financial part of their lives. But it takes an open mind, and a willingness to study, learn, TAKE ACTION to apply that knowledge, and sometimes make changes in our pre-conditioned behavior.

There are many routes to the top of the hill. Some people choose to take a gradual incline and may take a little longer to get there. Others prefer the direct route, and choose to pedal directly up the steepest side. The beauty is, the choice is yours. A good sponsor can show you the routes, and help you decide what's best for you. Then they should be there to encourage and guide you every inch of the way.

As human beings we seem to have an almost natural aversion to "change". But most people who achieve success in any important area of life usually have to LEARN to embrace change and welcome the challenge of becoming a better person.
