Tokka went to her eternal rest on Wednesday, April 16, 2008.

~ Rest in peace, sweetheart. We loved you so much! ~

Tokka was born on June 14, 1994. She is a purebred siberian husky and, true to her breed, she's a one-person dog. Although she appears intimidating, she loves other people and animals. But still her most favorite person of all is her owner.

The intelligence of siberians is outstanding; their love of running, legend. If you want a loyal friend with plenty of spunk, this may be the dog for you. But be forewarned: these wonderful animals are truly hyperactive, and will try your patience until they are well past puppyhood!

Tokka failed obedience school at six-months-old-- but after all, with those wonderful humans and dogs at school, who could concentrate on lessons? Not this dog, that's for sure! And yet, a strange thing happened. While she would not perform properly in class, she learned the practice lessons at home with ease. Now, all it takes is a slight hand signal or a nod of the head and she performs exactly. At times, if you ignore her, she will even go through all the sit, stand, heel, down, and stay positions on her own, trying to guess which one you want her to do.

Siberian huskies seldom bark, but instead have wonderful melodious voices that resemble yodeling, a cross between a bark and a howl. Tokka stands inside the fenced backyard and howls like a wolf when I visit a neighbor without her. It's delightful to hear.

Inborn traits that I can do without include digging and chewing. And the shedding seems endless, twice a year and a bit in between the regular periods. A few minutes of brushing out the dense undercoat daily, net almost a grocery bag full of fluffy white fur, which the resident birds collect for their nests within a few minutes.

Tokka belongs to the family and to the neighborhood. At night she sleeps on the floor at the foot of my bed; while I'm working, she sleeps in the corner by my computer desk. And, I belong to her. When someone comes into my office to visit, she stands between the two of us as though to say, "Don't come any closer, this human is mine!"
