Subject: Premarin

Hi, I had a baby in 1998 and another one in 1999. These were planned pregnancies. After the one in 1999 I took the birth control shot Depo Provera and it made me bleed for months. My doctor put me on Premarin to stop the bleeding but it didn't help, but I kept taking it. Now I'm pregnant again and very disappointed about it. Well, on the bottle of pills there's a warning sign not to take them if I am pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Do you know what can happen while taking this medicine while being pregnant. I'm very worried about this. I am not ready for another baby, but I don't have a choice now. Do you have any information about taking this medicine while pregnant? Any information you can send me would be appreciated. Thank you.K.J.
Ed. Note:Please be sure to read the product insert sheet for Warnings, Contraindications and Precautions as often times doctors do not mention them when prescribing Premarin, PremPro and PremPhase. The product insert sheet says the following regarding use of estrogens/progestins when pregnant:

WHO SHOULD NOT USE ESTROGENS: During pregnancy. If you think you may be pregnant, do not use any form of estrogen-containing drug. Using estrogens while you are pregnant may cause your unborn child to have birth defects. Estrogens do not prevent miscarriage. Also under - CONTRAINDICATIONS: Estrogens/progestins combined should not be given to women known or suspected of being pregnant, including use for missed abortion or as a diagnostic test for pregnancy. Estrogen or progestin may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman.

Subject: PremPhase

Hi, A friend of mine has been given a prescription for PremPhase to help her through her menopause. Well, I told her we ought to find out what it's made out of before she gets the prescription filled. As soon as I saw the word I told her that I thought it was probably made from pregnant mare's urine and found out that it is! Then I took her to the Premarin page on the web and showed her some of the pictures of how these horses are treated and now she's on my side. She is NOT going to get her prescription filled. I still don't take anything and neither does she. We are really a sight here at work, what with the hot flashes and all, but we just kind of laugh about it. Somehow, that helps. I figure one of these days, it will be over and we will be able to work and sleep in comfort. Until then, we are sweating and laughing together. Thanks, B.R.

Before I take further action, I would just like to say that I am horrified about the sordid background of Premarin, a drug I have been taking under false pretences now for four years. I will now be switching to an alternative and will be joining the various protest routes outlined in your very informative page.  Many thanks for providing this invaluable information. Subject: Natural Progesterone Cream

This is a great website. I am a District Manager with Arbonne International. We have just introduced a natural progesterone cream made to the specifications of Dr. John Lee's formula. It is dose-metered pump and airtight.
All of our consultants are currently being trained in the area of estrogen dominance and HRT. I am horrified to find the side-effects women are suffering from HRT and Premarin. My friend's mother is taking Premarin because her mother had osteoporosis and her doctor will not do a saliva test for her hormonal balance even after she requested it.
I'm going to tell as many consultants I know about this website....It's a great source of information and educational tool. Thank you. S.H.

Subject: Discontinue PremPro

What is the procedure for discontinuing Prempro? Do I need to see my doctor? I am a healthy woman, age 55, and I have been using PremPro for about 4 years. I am small boned, weigh 107, 5'5" tall. I run for 30 minutes three days per week and take lots of calcium. Thank you, L.J., Eugene, OR

Ed. Note: Dr. Susan Love (DR. SUSAN LOVES' HORMONE BOOK) suggests tapering off Premarin: "If you want to consider getting off Premarin at any time, you should consider tapering off. (There's no medical problem with stopping cold turkey, but you may experience severe withdrawal symptoms.) This means alternating one pill with half a pill (or a pill of a lower dosage) for two months, or taking a whole pill every other day. Then go to half a pill (or reduced dosage) every day for two months. Then go to half a pill every other day for two months. Finally, stop. (The pills aren't scored, so you need to break them either with a sharp knife or an inexpensive pill-cutting tool that most pharmacies carry.) If at any time you experience severe symptoms, you're tapering off too fast and need to slow down. Let your health care provider know if you decide to taper off."

My mother passed away this past Jan from uterine cancer. She had been on Premarin and had been experiencing heavy bleeding.  Her whole life she had been prone to polyps and other reproductive problems.  The doctor thought it was just her body adjusting to the hormones.  He changed her to Prempro.  It got worse.  Two years later, after surgery, chemo, and radiation she died one month after her 63rd birthday.  She will never see her 4-year old granddaughter grow up. She was a high - risk patient as far as risk of cancer from Premarin, I read that myself in the fine print. I can't comprehend why her doctor didn't seem to realize this. As a horse owner, with a degree in equine science, I think the production and marketing of this poison is rather foul anyway.  It is promoted as the woman's cure for everything. Women have been going through menopause since the beginning of our existance.  Why do we need a "cure" for a natural occurance? N.W.

Subject: Premarin Side Effects

Here we go again, the lung doctor just diagnosed me Thursday, I now have treatable Asthma. When I looked up the cause (I don't smoke) the first thing I found was long-term use of hormone therapy (estrogen) gives a woman as much as a 2-fold increased risk of subsequent asthma. I found this information on CBS HealthWatch. There is probably more information out there, but this just jumped out at me. What else can this stuff do to women, and yet doctors, the ones we go to for advice, still prescribe it? Now I have to be on inhalers for the rest of my life (One costs $85 and the other $65 and they only last a week.) More money Wyeth-Ayerst has cost me. One good piece of news, my blood pressure is normal after all these years, so I am off Toprol. The Premarin was giving me the high blood pressure, and no doctor could understand why I was bothered with it. Maybe one day they will all wake up. I have lost two months of work with this asthma, if I could total all the money, taking Premarin has cost me in lost work, hospital and doctor bills, it would probably make me sick.. Oh well, just so the chemical companies and doctors get rich, it doesn't matter about me. Y.K.

An HRT that I have found that works - CombiPatch is a Transdermal Estrogen & Progestin form of HRT made from soy and yams. Since it is a patch it doesn't pass throught the liver, has been shown to reduce Tryglyceride levels (Premarin and Prempro raise them), the dosage is smaller than oral therapies, it is good for cholesterol levels and it works. A far cry from Premarin. Pass it along... Combi Patch is great!!!! No Bleeding too! YEAH!!

Subject: Alternatives to Premarin

Thank you for your many interviews on this subject.  I have recently begun to take Tri-est and natural progesterone after being on Premarin for 13 years.  I think we have to educate some of our doctors and ask for what we want.  I had to do this.  He went along with my wishes but I don't think he would have suggested it.  Thanks again. Subject: Premarin and Natural Alternatives

I am flabbergasted, I am also furious and hopeful.  I did not realize Premarin was a POISON. Because that is what it is - a chemical and moral poison.  As of today I am not taking anymore.  You see, many of the symptoms described by these women are also my symptoms.  I knew something was wrong, I also felt my body was sick from the Premarin.  As a result I kept cutting my pills into smaller doses.  Intuititively I was right.  Thanks for the vindication.  It likely has saved my life.  My weight has dropped one pound since yesterday and I no longer have a 'drumbeat' heart and seem to be able to feel a connectivity with my limbs. I do have a serious back problem, but my legs work a tad better.  I could say I should have known better, but I did in fact 'know', only I trusted my doctor, assuming all things considered, that she was qualified, and I not.  So, I don't 'knock' myself for this tragic mistake and I sincerely hope the readers of this website, go easy on themselves, after all, that is why we have 'professionals' - to help us with things we are not trained for.

I feel so strongly about this, that I want to tell someone and help.  I care very much about people and I am both angry, and inspired to help.  Problem is, there doesn't seem to be much I can do except share what I think and feel with other women and hope to the 'Divine' it reaches those who are most in trouble.  GET OFF PREMARIN or any other substance related to Wyeth-Ayerst, they kill WOMEN and they kill horses - what's next? At the very least being on Premarin will make you feel sick, at the worst it will require an ambulance - in between you could be made so sick you need other medication - mentally or physically. The truth.

I have loved horses since I was a young child when I went to live with my uncle after the death of my parents. My uncle rescued abused horses and saved them from slaughter. All the horses I rode had been abused.  And with him all were given what they were owed and more.  He loved them and because of his love for horses, I learned what it was to love something that couldn't respond in the human way.  And I learned to 'grow' and love more. To stretch my ability to include 'non-humans' who had every right to be here and live here and grow here.  Horses have nothing but love and willingness to give.  Loyalty like a dog,   intelligence, like a friend, necessary 'distance' with love, like a cat.  But above all, they will give their lives for something they believe in - us. Premarin is founded on pain, abuse, suffering and endurance in the extreme.  And finally, death. Is it any wonder the 'drug' that comes from them is debilitating? I feel strongly about Premarin and horses and many other things.
I would like to share a very thoroughly researched and highly exciting book, by a Naturopath, Mr. Peter J. D'Adamo, titled: Eat Right For Your Type.  This is NOT a 'diet' book as such.  Apparently all humans have specific 'biochemistry' which happens to be determined by our Blood Types.  Each blood type reacts harmoniously to the appropriate food for that particular blood type and adversely to foods not compatible with it.  This book is the culmunation of 35 years of empirical research.  What I am trying to say by that is it is accredited in the scientific community as being valid.  His findings have been published in the British Medical Journal "Lancet'  and the JAMA.  There are some very intriguing findings in it.  One of them is that women with the Blood Type A, tend to have higher incidences of Breast Cancer.  He states that the apparent cause for this is blood type A's, are eating two kinds of food, common to our regular North American and European diets that increase the propensity for this disease in this particular Blood Type.  I strongly urge the reading of this book. Thank you for the courtesy of an email to express and communicate and to help. N.M.W.

I am 57 years old and started taking Premarin in 1985. I have a heart murmur, heart palpatations, and weight gain. I had a minor heart condition before taking Premarin but since I have been on it, my condition has gotten extremely worse. The fast heartbeat would happen once in six months and would last 15 minutes, then would go away on its own. After I started taking Premarin, it came more often and lasting 1-2 hours. Now I have to have shock treatment to get my heart back to a normal heartbeat. I didn't have irregular heartbeats before I started taking Premarin, I also get short of breath all the time. I also take other medications as well, I have to take blood thinners for the rest of my life because my heart condtion has worsened from the medication. I wouldn't advise anyone to take Premarin.
I hope my experience will help others who are thinking of using Premarin. K.C.

Subject: Fen-Phen and Premarin Together

Hello, I came across your web page and could not believe what I have read. I had no idea that what I am taking daily could be bad for me. I am 34 yrs old, I had a hysterectamy a few years ago. Four months before my surgery I was put on Redux, then switched to Fen-Phen, because Redux was keeping me awake at night. I was on the Phen-Phen for four months (approximately). Things were going pretty well with this drug. I was losing weight and seemed to be adjusting to the side affects. The hell began for me when I had my surgery and was put on Premarin 0.625mg and was still taking Fen-Phen. At the time, the Doctors did not connect the two drugs could be causing my problems.

I work in the mental health field, at a center for people who have phyciatric issues and recognize all the symptoms of a complete melt down. Well, that's what I had. Four weeks after my surgery, I ran out of the Fen-Phen and decided to wait a week or so to get more, I returned to work, It wasn't three days after stopping the Fen-Phen I ended up in the Mental Health Unit at our local hospital. I went completely crazy, racing thoughts, I felt like I was having a heart attack, I could not sleep or eat, I was on a manic high, I was not what you would call a compliant patient. I was not going to the hospital willingly. At the time, I thought maybe it was the Premarin that was causing all my problems, never conecting it could be the Fen-phen and Premarin. The story is long what happened to me, and very painful.

To make a long story short, I had a total nervous breakdown. It took a year and a half to get back to where I was mentally. I feel like two years of my life was taken from me. It wasn't until the research on Fen-Phen came out that I started thinking maybe this is what contributed to my illness. I can not even tell you all that I lost because of this and how to this day I struggle with what happened to me. You see, if I can understand why something happens, than I can let it go. But, no one is helping me find out why. While I was in the hospital I asked if the Fen-Phen could have been causing this, they said "no", I asked if the Premarin could be the cause of it, again "no". I found it hard to believe that someone of my age and no history of psyciatric episodes could be having her first one my age. I just could not believe it. I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar, and medicated against my wishes, which is a whole other story in itself. Have you heard of anyone else that had these syptoms after discontinuing the use of Fen-Phen? Please let me know if you have any info on the mixture of these two drugs and what it can do to you. Thank you for your time,
S.A.

Subject: Prempro

My mother, was a very active 56 year old woman.  Twelve years ago she had heart surgery and had an aortic valve replacement.  No problems, she remained on Coumadin.  Sometime in the summer she began taking Prempro for her osteoporosis.  On September 10, 1999 she died without warning from a blood clot which attached to her artificial valve and eventually (within one day) broke off and went to her brain.  Five days before she died she had terrible symptoms (i.e. trouble breathing, leg cramps, extreme bloating, and these are just to name a few!) and her doctor did absolutely nothing. I have done so much reading on the subject and it makes me absolutely sick that they had her on this in the first place, not to mention those poor innocent horses. No matter what anyone says, our family believes it has to do with the Prempro she started to take.  Has there been any similar cases of this?  Anyone who has any information or similar experiences please e-mail me, my family and I are desperate to come up with an answer to this terrible tragedy.  E-mail address: s.kells@worldnet.att.net. Subject: Premarin side effects

After reading your website I realized that the side effects that I have been experiencing MUST be related to the hormone replacement therapy. I have been taking Premarin for one month. But during that time, starting about 2 weeks ago, I started feeling very anxious, experiencing anxiety attacks and waking up in the morning with a fast heart beat. It was so bad one morning that I thought I was having a heart attack. I have also experienced dizziness upon getting up from a crouching position and seeing spots in front of my eyes. The scariest part was experiencing this anxiety while I was driving home from work. My doctor doesn't want to say that it's the Premarin - but as it is the only thing I have been taking that is new - I feel certain that this is what is causing my symptoms. I am grateful for your website information and of course I have stopped taking Premarin. A grateful reader. S.B.

Hi
I just finished reading your letter regarding Premarin. I will be 49 this Saturday. I had a complete Hysterectomy at age 24. The doctor told me I went through the change of life at that moment of surgery. I was given an injection after surgery and a prescription for 2.5 mg of Premarin when I left the hospital. I decided to stop taking Premarin and I lost 40 lbs in no time at all. My energy increased immensely. I felt 100% better. The pain in my legs and sleepless nights stopped. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. I went to my family doctors and mentioned I stopped taking Premarin. She told me to start taking it again. I told her I would not. I have not taken Premarin in approximately 5 months and the weight has stayed off, I feel great. From the obese aching blahs...to energy filled woman. I love it. I hope things work well for you...Take care...G.G.

Subject: GYN Says Take Premarin - M.D. Says No

I just turned 50. I still get my period every 25 days. I was prescribed Premarin vaginally by my gynecologist after a visit for cervical dysplasia. I never asked for it. When I asked what the contraindications were, he told me that I would have a very moist vagina and would have great intercourse. I should have known better but filled the prescription anyway. After receiving the side effects from my pharmicist, I was shocked that a more thorough history was not done at the time of prescription. I have a history of breast cysts and I am on thyroid medication. I phoned my family doctor who said I should not take it. M.L.

Subject: PremPro

Hi, this may be a strange thing I have come across! My mom who is 61 years old and has been taking PremPro for about 5 years has just told me today that she went to the doctor and he says she has a blood clot in her leg. Since November she has had swelling in her leg and severe pain, because of the holidays, etc. and not being able to get a quick appointment with her doctor -- she was just diagnosed with this today 1/18/2000. The doctor is supposed to call her back to let her know whether this is an acute or chronic blood clot. On Thursday she is supposed to have an MRI done on her leg. The clot was determined by having an ultrasound of the leg. After she told me all this I looked on the internet about acute blood clots, and checking various sites. I was on the phone with her while I was doing this. One of the sites related was The Truth About Premarin. I knew she was taking this for the past 5 years and thought I'd check this out. After reading all of these articles I was floored. I only hope this is not her case, however, it is all too ironic. Her doctor put her on Coumadin and this is where we are until Thursday. If you can help me out with advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I certainly do not want to scare her but I've printed all the articles out for her to read. Please let me know. Thank you. H.H.

Subject: What should I be taking?????

I am turning 38 this year and 2 years ago I had to have a hysterectomy due to extreme endometriosis. I stopped taking Premarin 3 months ago since I had heard that a lot of European women do not take it and seem to have no problems. My mother has had many strokes that has left her incapacitated in an extended care unit. She has been taking Premarin for approximately 35 years. This was one of the reasons I decided to quit, I do not know if Premarin has had anything to do with her condition. There is no stroke history in the family. I have asked pharmacists about what to take, but they are vague about it. Could you please email me and recommend what I could take as a substitute. I live just outside Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. You have done a fantastic job on this web page on this very important subject. I would be honoured to have my email letter on your site. I hope that other women are taking advantage of your site to learn more about Premarin and it's effects. Thank you again, Yours sincerely, P.M.

Are there any organizations in the UK campaigning about Premarin? If so, do you have their web-site links ? I am a doctor in the UK and always inform my patients where Premarin comes from. When patients find out virtually all want to change to a different HRT (without even mentioning the cruelty involved!). I am trying to find an organization in the UK interested in spreading the message of Premarin's origins to the public. No luck yet. Can you help? I've tried Animal Aid they directed me to PETA who are based in the US!

Ed Note: The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) campaigned to educate doctors and women throughout the UK about effective alternatives to Premarin. There are at least 30 alternative HRT products currently available in the UK, many of which are synthetic or plant derived from soya and/or yam plants. Information was sent to 10,000 doctors encouraging them to consider prescribing other HRT drugs. WSPA is located in Canada, but they work in cooperation with over 300 member organizations in 70 countries to promote animal welfare and conservation.

WSPA was part of an international inspection team that looked into the treatment of mares on PMU farms in 1995. The investigation uncovered the 'factory-farming' of thousands of horses in tiny stalls with harnesses attached to their rear quarters to collect urine and some unable to lie down or move around. They found that most of the farms provided inadequate bedding and limited amounts of water, with some mares suffering from sores caused by constant rubbing against tight harnesses and tiny stalls. Although Wyeth-Ayerst claims to have estbalished a voluntary code of practice to improve conditions and welfare, they have refused to allow WSPA inspectors back into the PMU farms to verify this.

Thank you so much for your wonderful article "The Truth About Premarin" My question is this: I am 53 year old woman. I had a complete hysterectomy 2 years ago. I have been taking premarin .625 mg.for 2 years. Calcifications showed up in my mammogram. I have a repeat test every 6 months. No new calcifications in the last 1 1/2 yrs. Calcifications are benign -I am small framed 98 lbs 4'10". My father died at 66 from conjestive heart failure. My mother is 79 and has no health problems. I am confused whether to lower dosage of premarin, try Evista or another alternative, or not take anything. What do you advise? Are there diagnostic tests I should take such as bone density? I am most concerned about protecting myself from breast cancer, and stroke and then heart attack. Please advise if possible. Thank You S.D.

Subject: Leg Cramps from Premarin

I am 31 and a year ago had to have a complete hysterectomy. I am shocked by the information I have read about at this web page. I always wanted to know more, but I didn't know how to find it. The day after my surgery I was told to take premarin 1.25 and so I automatically did what the doctor told me. Now a year later my legs ache all the time and at night I get leg cramps so bad I can't sleep and my legs hurt for weeks at a time afterwards. I also have headaches all the time, so now I'm on premarin 2.5 so does this double the chances of me having a stroke or blood clot. I feel so naive and helpless when it comes to this because i don't understand any of it. I really apreciate your web site, I just showed my husband the pictures of the horses it makes me sick to know this is happening and I'm so stupid I didn't ask questions about this drug. Thank you, F.F.

Subject: Just Wanted To Thank You

Hi, I have just been on your website for women's health issues and appreciate having the information. I am another patient whose ob/gyn pushed estrogen (and when I broke down and cried because I did not want it, her response was 'we have to tell you your alternatives') for borderline osteoporsis. After reading your information, I realize they (Renaisance Women's Center, Austin TX) are not operating in my best interest. I tried to report them to ACOG but that web site has no place to take mail for complaints. The other doctor also recommended Premarin to combat thinning hair, thin skin, incontinence and, to help the bones absorb calcium. In both cases, I broke down and cried because my mother died of breast cancer and I don't want to take estrogen. I got through menopause on my own so it is frustrating to me to have estrogen be pushed so hard now. I will be interested in learning about plant sources for estrogen and the compounding pharmacies. Estrogen, in particular Premarin, has gotten out of hand! Keep up the good work, A.C.

I still have mild night sweats that interrupt my sleep and the doctor that I have been seeing doesn't seem to know of anything else but Premarin. I'm looking into changing doctors. Any help is appreciated. Thank you, B.R.

Subject: Premarin Caused Stroke

I started taking Premarin a month ago after seeing my ob/gyn. Let me first state that I am a healthy 51 year old woman, NEVER smoked, stopped drinking 17 years ago. I exercise daily, walking 2.5 miles. My blood pressure is normal. Last Sunday night, I woke up, couldn't open my left eye, the left side of my face was numb, and my speech was garbled. My partner knew this was definitely a stroke. After going to the ER, and insisting to whoever would listen that Premarin had to be the culprit, I'm going through a battery of tests to determine if there was an underlying disease that caused this. My diagnosis in ER was TIA (transient ischemic attack.) I mean, come on now, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out! So... needless to say, I'm not taking estrogen again. And I'm almost certain that the MRI's and the dopplers and the whatevers of testing will come up negative. I'll keep you posted.
L.M.

Ed. Note: Please be sure to read the product insert sheet that should be included with Premarin/PremPro. Ask your pharmacist for one if it wasn't included with your prescription. It is a 4-panel fold-out (in very tiny print) that lists all the possible side effects. Under a heading "Risks of Estrogens and/or Progestins"there is a paragraph titled: "Abnormal Blood Clotting" - "Taking estrogens may cause changes in your blood clotting system. These changes allow the blood to clot more easily, possibly allowing clots to form in your bloodstream. If blood clots do form in your bloodstream, they can cut off the blood supply to vital organs, causing serious problems. These problems may include a STROKE (by cutting off blood to the brain, a heart attack (by cutting off blood to the heart), a pulmonary embolus (by cutting off blood to the lungs or other problems. Any of these conditions may cause death or serious long-term disability."

Ed. Note: Women should be aware that doctors will never admit that something they prescribed may have caused a serious health problem such as stroke or blood clot. When I voiced my concerns to my doctor about all the possible side effects he brushed off my concerns with "maybe they should tell you what can happen if you don't take it."

Subject: Premarin Caused Blood Clot

I am a 39 year old who just had a hysterectomy about 3 months ago.  I felt so wonderful after the agony of PMS and endless periods that I did not know what to do with myself.  However, after about a month I started to feel terrible, I had a blood clot in my right leg and was suffering with extreme swelling.  The doctor told me not to worry that, although the blood clot was very painful - it would not kill me and for the swelling he told me to contact my family  physician and get a diuretic. Even though he had doubled the dose of Premarin I had been taking, he did not think that had anything to do with the problems I was having. So about a week ago I stopped taking the Premarin.  I could not get over how much better I felt after two days.  And the hot flashes were not any worse than when I was on the Premarin.  I am still having to contend with the swelling, so much so that I had to quit my job as an administrative assistant at a real estate company. I thought not sitting for most of the day would make a difference - so far it hasn't.  Other than the insert in my prescription, that I read, I wasn't even asked if I would mind taking it. It was handed to me the next morning after my hysterectomy and I assumed it was what I was supposed to do.  I did not do my homework and will never take a medicine without asking more questions.  I never will assume that my doctor always knows what he is doing when prescribing certain drugs.  Thanks for the information and for giving me a place to voice my opinion - at least I know I am not alone or crazy. Thanks!! L.S.

Ed. Note: Another example of a doctor who will not admit that Premarin caused a blood clot even though he had this woman on a double dose!! Would this doctor's casual and indifferent attitude regarding a serious health problem be the same if his wife, or a close relative suffered a blood clot while on Premarin and would he then encourage her to stay on it? The number of women suffering stroke and blood clots from Premarin may be much higher than we are being led to believe because doctors will not admit that Premarin may be causing them. And they continue to say "the benefits outweigh the risks"? I think after reading the letters of women who've suffered strokes and blood clots after going on PremPro,(who were very healthy before going on it) some reassessing on the safety of PremPro needs to be seriously considered. BE SURE to read the next letter.

Subject: Premarin Side Effects

Thank you for saving my life. I have been taking Premarin for many years, never thinking it could be bad for me. I certainly didn't know that it came from horses. When I think about how sick I have been, throwing up, lasting two days at a time. I would be so sick, someone would carry me like a baby to the emergency room. They would give me a shot of Phenergan and Demerol, push me in a wheel chair to the car. I never even remember any of the trip there and back home. This has been going on for many years about one or two times a month. I have been seen by at least five different doctors, all of them thinking I was having migrains. My blood pressure is high, so I am on medication for that. I am also on an anti-depressant. The last time I was so sick, I made up my mind that I could not go through another attack like this, no matter what it took.

I was on the computer one day when I found your site. I quit taking Premarin and have not been sick at all. Now I get so mad at so many people for not telling me about Premarin and it's side effects. I have spent thousands of dollars on medicine and doctors, not to mention lost time at work and away from family, because of this drug. I have been sick from Premarin for so many years, it seems almost strange now that I feel good again. I am going to take all the material that I have collected on the subject to my family doctor, whom I have been going to for only a year. He is a very understanding young man that is very open to anything that will help his patients. I know he will give me something else to replace the Premarin, and be glad to get the information. I feel as if I have been given a new chance at life. That medication would build up in my system so, that I could almost feel it, then I would start throwing up. Anything that makes a person that sick, should not be given to anyone. I am an animal lover, having many birds and the sweetest dog, so it just bothers me so much to think any animal is being treated badly. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest. Maybe, somehow, I can help someone else.

Subject: Side Effects of Premarin/Provera

I started going through the change at the age of 37. I could not get my ob/gyn to help me with the abnormal bleeding etc. After much frustration and emergency room visits, I insisted that a blood test be performed to determine if, in fact, I was going through the change. The results were positive and my doctor prescribed Premarin and Provera. I never did feel good while taking these, especially on the sixteenth day when I had to start the Provera. I had shortness of breath and would wake up suddenly gasping for air. I complained to my family doctor who thought I was experiencing some asthma, which I had never been bothered with before. The episodes continued and each month it got worse. I notified my gyn and she reduced the miligrams of Provera and the breathing became better. In Feb. of 1996 I had to have breast surgery for a tumor which, thank God, was not cancer but my surgeon felt it was related to hormones. I was scared to take these but my family doctor said the good outweighed the bad. So, I continued. The abnormal bleeding and fatigue continued and I went to my gyn for my yearly exam in March of 1998 and was having abnormal pap smears. By the time all the repeat pap smears were being done I was starting to panic. I went to my surgeon who began his own tests and found that I had to have a hysterectomy. There was cancer in the uterus but the surgeon said he got it all and I didn't need further treatment. I chose never to use Premarin again and at this time I am not using any hormone replacement. I do have hot flashes, but I don't have the other problems associated with Premarin. I would not recommend this to anyone and have cautioned women about taking this medication. I do not feel it is safe.

Subject: Dear Friend

I just pulled up your site - If someone has no signs of menopause... maybe a couple of warm, not even hot flashes and has a couple of mood swings, why would the doctor prescribe PremPro.  Last year it was suggested at Pap time and I said no.  Yesterday I said, "YES"  took one and knew it felt wrong. I didn't feel right about it to begin with, but why would a respected doctor prescribe it to a woman in her early 50s who is seemingly healthy?? I read about the perks and free pills, but I would hate to think I fell into that trap. It is so upsetting.  I am just going to call him and tell him that I will pass for a while. MY question...WHY DID HE PUSH IT SO MUCH...without me asking?? In any case, I am not continuing with the medication.  I don't think the one pill I took would hurt. I did feel so strange last night though.   I am a vitamin/herb/natural type of person.  I even told him about chaste berry, black cohosh,  etc. and he has always been up for alternative stuff.  I just don't understand it. I am really disillusioned and feel duped. I will look into the naturals. I have been reading about them, but not enough to make a permanent decision.  If there are no side effects as in the black cohosh extract etc.,then I would try any of the supplements. This really bothers me - when I read all the contraindications and warnings...that would have been enough...then your site...I don't think so!!!   I will read it in more detail after work.  I just read the main page.
Thank you,

Subject: PremPro

I started out taking Premarin and Provera. When PremPro came out my Dr. gave me samples to try. The nurse told me to take them and see if they were alright for me. I took them and they did not seem any different from the other prescriptions. One night while driving, I also got the feeling in my head that I had a hat on that was too tight. I nearly passed out and prayed that I could get out of traffic and off the road. I also had another spell that I can not quite explain, it seemed like I was not quite myself, not like I was passing out but like I was not quite with it. I became flushed and thought if I could put my head down that I would feel better. I ended up in the ER with very high blood pressure and am now on medication for it. I have had that feeling many times with the tight hat on my head, when I explained it to my doctor they looked at me like I was crazy. When I read about J.P. having the same symptoms I decided I needed to do something about this medication. I also have had many polyps removed, spent a lot of my savings on tests, and have bleeding now since I had a D and C. The doctors say that I am allright, but I do not agree. Thanks for listening.

Subject: Thank You

I just finished reading your web page on Premarin.  I was really shocked, I had no idea where or how this stuff was made, let alone the side effects of it.  I had a complete hysterectomy four years ago.  I am 48 years old. My doctor put me on premarin 1.25 and I have been taking it ever since.  Not as prescribed, but only as I remembered to take it, which was about 3 times a week. I just got a new prescription and decided to start taking it like I was told to.  Well I have been doing that for about one month now.  Yesterday I quit taking it all together because for the past month I was so dizzy, tired, leg and joint pain, migranes and tingling and numbness in my hands.  The dizziness being the worst because I live on a mountian and have to drive on and off for work and some days I drive for hours on my job. I would start my day saying a prayer to keep me and everyone around me safe from harm.  I wouldn't even put my grandchildren in the car with me because of it. I got to thinking about it and realized that it all started after taking that SILLY PREMARIN PILL.  So I went looking for information on it and found your page.  That is one pill that I will never take again and I will spread the word to everyone that I know about it and the way it is produced.  I am an animal lover and can't understand how people can be so cruel just for money. The dizziness has all but stopped and I WILL be looking for something else to take.  Thank you for putting this information out there to be found.   G. G. Tennessee

Thank you for the only real information I have been able to reach on Premarin. A so-called alternative doctor just recently recommended Premarin cream for vaginal dryness for me. I felt a red flag go up and decided not to use it. I have had lots of problems trying to get balanced after a hysterectomy. I am 53 and have gone through hell with doctors and menopause. I am still searching and will only do the alternative products. I will take advantage of the info you provide and forward it on to friends. My best friend has been on premarin for many years. Thank you. S.H.

Subject: Regarding Cenestin

Thanks.... Had to educate my doctor some but he did look it up and a prescription was written. So far Cenestin has been working just fine. It is also cheaper than Premarin. Unfortunately it seems many doctors are unaware of it. The key to diminishing the role of Premarin is in educating doctors who prescribe conjugated equine estrogens and second to reach the Premarin users. I stumbled onto your site and I am a Premarin user no more. S.B.

Thank you for providing this website. I read for months about HRT trying to decide whether to start it and never read anything about where the drug comes from. I learned about your website as a result of reading an article in my local newspaper about a woman who runs a farm for cast off horses. She had just adopted one of the PMU foals, her first. A side bar to the article gave more information about the drug, mentioned there would be a protest at a local Walgreen's (I read it after the fact) and listed 3 web links for people to read. One was the drug company's, and one was yours. I wrote a letter to the editor thanking him for running the article and providing the web sites. I plan to write more letters in connection with this issue.
This information needs to get to ALL women.

Subject: For Women's Health Network

Thank you for sharing your history. I have been taking PremPro since January and recently switched to the Combipatch. I dont know if this is a preventative drug or a terrible thing that can get a healthy person like me terribly ill. I feel very unsure. On one side my doctors all say I "should consider it" but I have no medical knowledge to asert myself on a final decision. My mother died at 65 of heart attack and my grandmother of the same at 67, (both got osteoperosis).
I think that much needs to be done regarding medical practices versus drug companies' financial interest. And firmly believe in public education on the matter as a first step. Please keep doing what you are doing. M.F.

I went through menopause over nine years ago. My doctor felt I should be on PremPro for estrogen and progesterone. I was initially put on Provera for ten days, then waited one week after I finished taking the Provera and started the Prempro. I really felt good when I was on the Provera, but when I started the PremPro I became very exhausted even after a good nights' sleep. My doctor instructed me to remain on it as it takes some time for my body to adjust. My doctor had a bone scan done which revealed that my bones are in good condition and no osteoporosis. Could you please send me information about the pros and cons of Prempro. Thank you very much. L.S.

Subject: Side Effects of HRT

Author,
Very interesting article. I am a network chiropractor in phoenix, and want to know more about the side effects of HRT. What are the emotional effects of putting off menopause indefinitely? Is that what happens? Do women keep menstruating as long as they take it? If puberty is an important cycle in a woman's life, then by the same token wouldn't menopause be just as important? To me, these are the cultural problems that create the environment that allows the horses to be produced for the naive public who believes the pharmaceutical companies, medical profession, and the ridiculous FDA. Subject: PremPro Caused Uterine Fibroid Growth

I was a 50 year-old very healthy woman when I went for my GYN appointment in July of 1997. The only problem I had was uterine fibroids. I had two and they had been there for at least 8 years and never bothered me. When I went for my check-up in 1997, I had not had a period for 3 months, and only had minor menopausal symptoms. My GYN said I should take hormones to prevent osteoperosis and heart attacks. I trusted her and started taking PremPro. A week after I started taking it, I was very sick with flu-like symptoms for about 10 days. I did not associate this with PremPro. I then started feeling PMS everyday. I had cramps, bleeding almost all the time, terrible bloating, light-headedness and seeing spots, feeling numbness in my face. I called the Doctor and was told that it takes time for your body to adjust to hormones so I continued to take them.

Then I started having pain in my lower back, and throbbing pain in the area of my left ovary. I was given an anti-inflamatory drug and the pain in my ovary went away. A few months went by and the pain came back. I went to the Doctor and told her something had to be done, as the pain was intense. She prescribed a different anti-inflammatory drug and it went away for a while longer. In the meantime, the back aches and the light-headedness and seeing spots continued.

In February of 1998, I almost fainted while driving home for work. It felt like I had a hat on that was too tight and I was on the verge of passing out. I went to the emergency room and my blood pressure which had usually been 120/62 average was 177/84. I told him I thought it was the PremPro and he told me to stop taking them, and see my regular doctor. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and put on blood pressure medicine and the seeing spots, lightheadedness, and numbness disappeared. I am not overweight, and have never smoked or drank. The only strike against me was my mother had high blood pressure. The pain in my side got worse and I told my GYN Doctor that something would have to be done. I had a total hysterectomy. I had 4 large fibroids in my uterus, one pressing on my spine (the back pain). I had two cysts on the left ovary and one on the right. The pathology report also said I had multiple, other fibroids. The uterus is supposed to weigh between 77-100 grams, mine weighed 578 grams. Right before I had my hysterectomy, I was dragging. I had to lie down as soon as I got home from work, and sometimes I felt as if everything was going to fall right out. I was swollen, bloated, bleeding, and cramping. I truly believe that the fibroid growth was caused by the PremPro, and I may have developed high blood pressure eventually, but I don't think it would have been as sudden and as soon. My mother developed it in her late 60's. The day after surgery I had hot flashes from hell, and was so miserable that I let her put me on Estradiol (estrace, generic) the lowest dose you can take. The only problems I have had was insomnia. She increased the dosage to 1.25 mgs. and now, a year later I feel like a new person.

Subject: Ignored Doctor's Advice

I am shocked to have read THE TRUTH ABOUT PREMARIN. Best of all, I am very happy that you have provided this information. THANK YOU! I am 40 and experiencing the first stages of menopause. I have neglected my Doctor's advice to take Premarin, because of the risks he made known to me. But, he never mentioned where the drug originated. I am so glad I have ignored his advice and will seek other forms of medication if necessary. I am also a Horse Lover, having two beautiful horses of my own. I plan to become active in spreading this horrible news and active in other areas of protecting horses. I work in a Long Term Care Nursing Home, primarily women as employees. I will post this shocking truth on our bulletin boards first thing in the morning. R.W.-OHIO

Subject: Best Alternative?

I have just been advised to start taking a estrogen/progestin HRT (I still have a uterus). My doctor suggested PremPro. I am not interested in it for many reasons, humane and health related. But the alternatives are vast. On the chart titled Common Estrogen Replacement Therapies, I find many alternatives. But how do I know which one to choose? Since I am advised to take progestin in combination with the estrogen replacement, how do I find out which is the best way to take it? Every day, or only 10 days of each month? or other? Thank you. Subject: Premarin and Doan's Pain Reliever

I began taking Premarin in December 1998. When I recently had back pain I took Doan's extra strength pain reliever (Magnesium Salicyate Tetrahydrate 580mg). I am not sure how many days I took this maybe 2-3. Then I started getting very depressed. I was trying to think of ways to kill myself. I have never been depressed before. I was very scared. I was to the point of trying to find some way to kill myself and not leave a mess for my family. I took all of my clothes out of the closet and packed them up to give away. After several days of not taking the pain medication I started to feel better and have no suicidal feelings or depression at all now. I'm not sure of the interaction of these to medications but I am much more leary of what I take now. P.S.

Subject: Good Results with 5 times the normal dosage!!

I saw your email address on the internet in a web site discussing the cons of Premarin. I'm getting very good results from this product and I've been on it for about 10 years. I'm forty-six years old and my ovaries gave out about ten years ago. My problem is that my body has developed a tolerance for the drug and if I try to reduce it, which I have tried in the past, my body goes into a tailspin. As the years have gone by I've had to increase my dosage to avoid menopausal symptoms. Right now my daily dosage is 7.5 mg. That's right, I take six yellow pills every day. I'm also on Provera of 2.5mg and Andriol of 40 mg. The doctor knows about all of this, except for one third of the Premarin. She has prescribed 5.0 mg per day, so I just get my prescription early. I'm afraid to tell her. Have you ever heard of a situation like this? I feel fine, but am a bit concerned about long term effects on my liver. Thank you for your time. L.T. in B.C., Canada

Do you know what kind of side effects this premarin can give my dog? The vet justput my dog on these pills about a month ago for wetting and they are not helping her. Subject: Premarin

I read your e-mail and although I am one to accept a doctor's recommendation I am becoming more concerned about the drugs and the problems. I have been on Premarin only 9 months and 4 months ago I started having severe symptoms of lameness in the right hip and upper leg. There was no excrutiating pain, just severe limitation of motion and inability to walk without a limp. My doctor ordered rt. hip x-rays and LS spine x-rays which the radiologist read as normal.."no significant evidence of arthritis, no narrowing of the joint spaces, no boney abnormality." The Orthopedic Doc stated right hip arthritis, abnormal x-ray and placed me on Naproxen (Naprosyn). I have now developed severe symptoms in the right shoulder, mininal symptoms in the left hip and now stiffness in the right knee. Granted, this could be arthritis gone on the rampage. However, I am 52 years old, an avid skier, hiker, tennis player, bike rider, etc. How could this have happend so fast? I now am wondering about the Premarin issue. This probably is far-fetched but I need to investigate all the possiblities before accepting another wrong diagnosis. Just for more input, I was misdiagnosed last year with diverticulitis and ended up in surgery with a twisted fallopian tube and an abscess the size of a tennis ball, which the docs diagnosed, finally, with an abcess of the colon. ONLY after opening me up, did they find the real cause of my pain. I HAD ASKED MY DOCTOR FOR A YEAR TO ULTRASOUND MY OVARIES. HE REFUSED!!
Just now wondering if the Premarin therapy could possibly be the problem. By the way, I have worked in the Primary Care Medical field for 21 years and know that medicine is not an exact science and imperfect, but generally have great faith in my doctors for whom I work. For what it's worth, thanks. S.L.

Subject: Premarin Dear God!

Today I am sitting here looking for information on the Premarin that I have taking for 6 years. I think I'm going to throw up. Who in God's name do people think they are anyway. I mean, for six years I have been taking horse's urine!! What they do to these horses is cruel. I've been ill. Today I had a mammogram to see what is causing the pain I am having in my right breast. Let's pray that it is good news. My friend thinks I'm nuts (mood swings, depression, sick all the time, lack of interest in sex and so on.) He said, "it's your Premarin, tell your doctor to take you off of it!" The truth about Premarin is so shocking to me, I am having trouble comprehending that my doctor did not tell me about this. I had cervical cancer when I was thirty, and instead of something safe they put me on horse's urine. I swear someone is going to stand up to this. Do you know of an attorney that handles such cases as I would like to step up to the plate and do battle with the fools who have allowed me to take horse urine for the past six years. Good God, no wonder I'm sick! Thank you for the information, L.D.

Hello and what a shock to read!! I am 45 and in need of a hysterectomy agreed by both primary care physican and my ob/gyn. I have lived with 9 years of excessive bleeding during my periods. My HMO, QualChoice of Arkansas, made my ob/gyn put me on 10mgs of provera for 2 months. I have finished my two months and have started my period and its back to usual, excessive bleeding. The next step my HMO wants to put me through is a D&C and thats where I have put my foot down and said no and besides that both doctors agree I don't need it because for my case it wont work. During all these times I have also become severely anemic. Today I go see my primary care physician and he puts me on Premarin 4 times daily for 5 days to stop my period and LOL the dose is 0.625 mg. All that I have read here now has me really worried over just taking this for 5 days. Thank God its not something I have to take on a constant basis. I am going to copy this site down and print and give to my doctor. I love my doctor dearly and I know he would never with full knowledge give me something that is going to hurt me--at least I hope he won't. I just want to thank you for all this info and in letting me vent and make a decision once the hysterectomy does occur. Respectfully, M.D.

Subject: Premarin alternative

Hi, I am an RN and soon to be Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. I graduate in Sept. I used to raise horses and lived on a ranch doing this for 15 years. I LOVE horses & I have known about Premarin for many years. There is a new product out for HRT called Cenestin which is the only other conjugated estrogen available. It got FDA approval about a month and 1/2 ago. It will be ready for doc's and NP's to prescribe by mid June of this year. It is manufactured by Duramed Pharmaceuticals. I feel strongly about the use of Premarin and would like to do whatever I can to ban its use. How can something produced from a horse work in harmony in a woman's body? Yes, it may alleviate some symptoms of menopause but I know that the impurities in the product do more damage then good!

I would like you to please let the world know that there is an alternative out there that is vegetable based and is cheaper than Premarin and more effective. I have emailed your link to every female I know and I have printed out all 15 pages to pass along to my fellow classmates and professors. Thank you so much for the work you have done to help rescue the horses. They are such fine noble creatures and anyone who has ever been around them know that having them stand anywhere for very long is cruel! They are meant to be free to run and graze.
And anyone who has ever seen a mare and foal know the bond is unbelievably strong for both of them. I can't even bear the thought of what is happening to these animals. Thank you again. And if there is anything I can do just let me know. I am passionate about this cause. Respectfully, J. A. F. RN, OB/GYN NP Student

Subject: Alternative ERT products To Premarin

It is interesting to see some of the comment by doctors about the use of Premarin as hormone replacement therapy. I would like to find out more about some estrogen replacement therapy products. Which particular one would be automatically interchanged for Premarin? Are these estrogen replacement therapy products also need doctor's prescription to buy them from the chemist? And would this products work for women who need the HRT due to Hysterectomy? I would also like to find a list of food products which would help reduced the symptoms of menopause. I am interested to find out the quantities of these products you need to consume to reduce the menopause symptoms. Would you be able to provide me with such a list? Thank You, P.C.

I have been sick off and on for four years and it slowly had been getting so bad that at times I felt like I was actually going to die. I didn't know what was wrong with me and I actually came very close to believing people when they would say it's all in your head. Fatigue, allergy symptoms, headaches, insomnia, every symptom you can think of I had it. I went to so many doctors, allergists, etc. Finally one day my husband said, is there any chance of this from the Premarin you take? I said I don't think so, but got reading about Premarin after I had gone in to see if I had enough sleeping pills to end all of my physical problems, and I didn't thank God.
The more I read, the worse it got about the Premarin. Why in God's name would this drug be given to women, and not told what kind of problems there could possibly be! I can't even work anymore, and have never been sick like this in my life. Why in the world would the doctor that did my hysterectomy put me on this hormone and not tell me what it could do? My t-cell(helper) count is at almost 2300, and the only reason I know it is because I did some reading and I insisted to my doctor that he check my tcells, and he argued about why I wanted it done. Then when I called about the blood test results, and they told me about the t cells being too high, they would not even take the time to tell me why.
This has been the worst four years of my life, I haven't been able to enjoy my life at all, our children, grandchildren, sex, nothing, and I am only 44 years old. I have been so sick that I felt like I was going to die. Thank you for all your information that I have read. It has been appreciated. Sincerely, B.M.

Subject: Alternative for Premarin

Hello my name is Jule. I recently discovered the horrible truth about Premarin. I found your site and read the different doctor's opinions WHAT SOME DOCTORS SAY about Premarin. I have become very concerned because my sister has been taking premarin along with progesterone for approximately 6 years. She is 34 years old and has been taking the two drugs because she was diagnosed 6 years ago with "Hypogonodism of the Pituitary". She recently received the diagnosis of "osteoperosis". The reason I am emailing you - is to ask if you can send or email my sister some information that would help her. She is very afraid and needs help. She has been suffering from the various side effects all these years and wants to discontinue taking the two medications. She is seeking an alternative and is looking for a doctor that can help her. If you can help, please email her. Sincerely, J.G.

Subject: Premarin Horror

My doctor recently prescribed Premarin after I had a hysterectomy. I had no idea, until reading your article, how Premarin is derived. I am horrified that these horse farms exist! Child abuse begins with animal abuse, and somewhere along the lines this must be eradicated from our society! I am writing to Wyeth Labs in Philadelphia to express my horror that they would support this cruelty to animals. I also plan to speak to my doctor about another alternative to Premarin - one that is made from plants. Thank you for enlightening the public, especially me, as doctors push these medications without concern for the animals that have been unnecessarily sacrificed. My son, who attends college, is also getting involved, and is writing to our senator, congressman, and other legislators to express his outrage (although this is a college project, he is also horrified at this cruelty to animals). I feel awful that I contributed, in part, to this horror, but I will no more! B.W.

Subject: Premarin/18 yr old

Hi, I was just quickly flipping through your website for information. I am an 18 year old girl and I am way behind in my mensturation cycle. I never actually did get my period until I started taking Premarin and Cycrin. Although I am finally relieved to have gotten it, I am worried about the effect of Premarin on my body. I was wondering, because through many other stories I hear about women taking Premarin after or before menopause, what specific alternative would be better for me? I've been taking Premarin every day for the past 6 months and Cycrin every 15 days for 10 days at a time. My doctor said that I should stay on it because they want to see if it works. I guess I am a special case, but in your knowledgable opinion, do you think that I should stay off Premarin and get on an alternative or is this the best option for my situation? Thanks! E.I.

Subject: Premarin Project

When I was younger I read an article about Premarin in a Horse Illustrated magazine and became enraged. I then thought there was nothing I could ever do about it except refuse to take the medication when I became older. I am now a Senior in high school and one of the requirements for graduation is to do a research project and put the research results into motion to prove you are capable of understanding the topic and want to educate others about your research. I sat in my room tonight thinking about what I should do my project on and thought about the meeting I had previously attended tonight on horses. I have decided to peruse the topic of Premarin and the cruelty and uselessness of the drug. I would be greatly honored if you could provide some assistance on how to go about doing this project and possibly a great way to inform the public. You help is greatly appreciated. N.D.

Subject: MD Prescribes Plant-Based Medicines

Thanks for your informative page-- I use it for patient handouts. One thing you might clarify. Although I use the plant-based medicines preferentially, occasionally a woman will tell me that "only Premarin works." Do you think that is due to advertising hype, or some intrinsic difference in some women's metabolism? My wife, who is having a terrible time with menopausal symptoms swears that she would prefer to use oral, plant derived hormones, but they don't work as well as Premarin-- and in turn, Premarin doesn't work as well as injectable estradiol (which is fairly rapidly converted to estriol). The "experts" all minimize these subjective differences. I don't know what to think, so I just try to do what seems right for any individual patient. T.S.D., MD, Astoria, OR

Subject: RE: Premarin/PMU Farms

Please take time to read 2/20/99 article in the "Thoroughbred Times" a national weekly journal to the TB industry re : "A battle over Premarin" by Denise Steffanus page 66. The article sites investigations of the husbandry practices of the PMU farms by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), USDA, and three other "respected equine researchers". All three groups found the allegations of cruelty (to the horses) were simply not true. Neither is the contention that Premarin contains urine. The slant of the article is in support of PMU and Premarin. The AAEP issued a position statement: "Through on-site investigation and peer review of ongoing research, AAEP believes the collection of urine from pregnant mares and care of their offspring as prescribed by the recommended Code of Practice represents responsible management of horses to produce a commodity for the benefit of mankind that should not result in abuse, neglect, or inhumane treatment of horses."
I am assuming the author is not an investigative reporter interested in gathering and presenting all the facts. Nevertheless, horse people will read this as truth and wonder what's the big deal - horses are fine and Premarin is benefiting "mankind". What man has taken Premarin or are we really talking about the men at Wyeth-Ayerst? Sincerely, T.S.

Dear Fellow Rescuer,

Like you - we've been providing public education on Premarin for years, but it wasn't until recently that we've been able to supply a readily available solution to the problem! We found that even though women became aware of the atrocities involved in the manufacturing of premarin, they continued to use it because their doctor's told them "there wasn't a 'quality' alternative available". WRONG!!!! We are now able to supply the public with the readily available, effective, natural alternative - progesterone. Join us in getting this incredible product to more people, for only when the demand for premarin goes down will we have made a difference on the LARGER scale. We want to show the masses this natural, HEALTHLY alternative by advertising, networking and showing other rescue groups how they too can add to their existing fundraisers by providing the public with THE BEST alternative to premarin.

Our Progesterone Cream is an all-natural progesterone cream, which is manufactured to the specifications of Dr. John R. Lee. It is an excellent alternative for traditional synthetic hormone replacement therapy and is the only natural progesterone cream on the market today with Activin, an all natural high potency grape seed extract proven to be a powerful free radical scavanger. It is also a wonderful product for women suffering from PMS symptoms and can even prevent/reverse osteoporosis! Current research indicates it is extremely effective in preventing breast, uterine, cervical and even prostrate cancer. If you're not well versed on progesterone, and it's many benefits, there are countless books available on the subject including the best seller "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" by Dr. John R. Lee. You can also look up Dr. Lee and his research information on the Internet: www.johnleemd.com.

Please join us in promoting this wonderful product. The sale of this cream means that not only will women and men across the country be able to live healthier, longer lives, but so will thousands of horses! No longer will horses have to suffer in order for women to receive hormone replacement therapy; our Progesterone Cream is the natural, effective alternative.

Please contact us at (949) 855-4357, fax (949) 583-2863, or E-mail IndianaClone@msn.com to find out more information on this remarkable product. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, S.B.

Subject: Endometriosis, Estriol, and Triest

Can you give more information on success stories for treatment with endometriosis - haulting it's progression? I have it severe and they are trying to take an ovary out right now, it infiltrated the ovary bad with a now suspected neoplasm after multiple cysts (chocolate filled, blood filled, mucous filled all on one ovary which is also slightly enlarged now and is odd shaped). I felt that if they take that ovary, they will then take another, then the uterus because the endometriosis and its symptoms are already there in those places.
Also, my mother lives in a small town in Alaska. She is poor. She had a hysterectomy for cancer. They put her on just conjugated estrogens after, which are carcinogenic. Do you have resource materials, powerful ones, that we can get to her uncooperative physicians so they will give her an estriol strong enough to stop the hormonal shock symptoms? She has poor memory, very poor, it almost cost her her job. Purple splotches all over her legs - generally just a really poor health situation.
Do you have any back ground on the safety of Triest, would this be an alternative for her non-carcinogenic? I think they could cost her her life if we don't do something, she can't travel out of that dark age little town because she doesn't have any money and neither do we to send her. Thanks for the web page. J.D.

Hello, I am the President of Top Notch 4-H Equestrians from Douglassville, Pennsylvania. A friend and I are preparing to perform a presentation on Premarin. We would really appreciate if you could inform us on how to obtain the Fox News report as well as the Extra report. Also, the New York Post article. If you can obtain these or inform us on where to locate them we would greatly appreciate it. If we are successful with our presentation on state level we will then be qualified to go to national level. Meaning many people would hear us and hopefully change they're minds about Premarin. These tools would only increase our chance of winning. Thank you, and respond to me a.s.a.p. H.S.

Subject: Horse Farms/U.S.

I read your articles quite frequently, and I noticed that you now state there are abou 40 farms in northern North Dakota, but about 200 in the United States. Do you mean there are a total of 240? or just 200. Also, when were the additional 200 established? Is there any guidelines for the maintenance of the prenant mares? Or does Wyeth-Ayerst have so much power that they can keep out the Humane Society etc? My daughter and I are trying to get the word out in our area, but the local newspaper is not interested, and when we do put flyers up on local bulletin boards, they are removed. The physicians in this area are not interested in educating the women about what is in the hormone supplement they may be taking. We have been writing letters to magazines, and I am planning to write to Gov. and Mrs. Ridge, since the company headquarters are located in Pa. (Wyeth-Ayerst). I am somewhat dismayed to learn about 200 additional farms, but I am committed to fighting this battle. Thank you for the info, and I'll continue to watch for your updates.

Subject: Thank you!

Dear Author, I want to applaud your bravery and tenacity for bringing the issue of women's need for better and non-cruelty made hormones to the forefront. I was very shocked and saddened after hearing how this was made. I would never subscribe to this cruelty to these helpless animals, by putting a hormone made from their urine in my body!
My doctor prescribed Prempro and I never took it. Thank goodness, I saw your web page. I have given the information to other women that I know, my doctor and anyone else I can think of. I wrote to the Department of Agriculture as well. I have been taking Estradiol instead for the last 3 or 4 months and feel fine on the estrogen, but I hate the effects of the progestin, (pms type side effects. In fact I am thinking of not taking them anymore at all. If it wasn't for the pms side effects I might continue, but it's as bad as the premenaposal symptoms!
Which comes to my question for you. Have you heard of Novogen's Promensil? It's from Australia and has apparently been approved to be sold over the counter like Remefemin in the United States. I believe it is made from the red clover plant. Please check in at their web site at www.novogen.com. It sounds so interesting and I would like to give it a try. I was very impressed. There was also a full page ad where I saw it first in Family Circle magazine (I think the most current issue). I didn't notice it on your web page alternatives, so I thought I'd let you know. If you already know about it, what do you think? What have you heard? I would appreciate any information you do have, since I would like to stop taking Estradiol and get on a natural plant estrogen hormone.
Thank you again, you are doing an admirable deed by keeping all informed about this atrocious behavior on the part of Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceutical Company. Sincerely, T.E.

Subject: Availability of Alternatives

(Second Letter) I have been attempting to find out what we use for "hormone therapy" at all. Unfortunately, our portion of the military system (Army) is not run by whatever drugs the doctors choose, but by whichever drug is cheapest at the time. The system is terribly constrained in both budget and time. The people who work in it are absolutely harried and this is obviously not a priority for them. I hope to make it one.
I have called the clinic supervisor and will keep calling until he can give me an answer. If I find out that the clinic is using any form of Premarin (I have compiled an extensive list) I will attempt to persuade him to stop the use of the drug and to seek alternatives. The military system is a very difficult animal and it takes a lot of time to see changes implemented. However, if I do not feel as though my concerns are being resolved in a timely manner, I am going to try other measures. I intend to make and distribute flyers to the local clinics and the main hospital here in Germany.
I would also like to offer a class on the origin of Premarin, its side effects and the alternatives that are available. If you know where I can get any materials to help me, please let me know. I have been searching the net diligently in order to find these materials and to ensure that I am well informed. The military community is large. There are literally millions of female soldiers, military wives and retirees who utilize the military system for their health care. If they are informed, they are a powerful vehicle for change. I hope to make a difference in my 14 remaining months with the service and hopefully for a long time after that. I know the mares and foals will thank me. You are more than welcome to use any correspondence that we have on your site. Thank you for asking, and thanks again for the help and information.

(Second letter) Thank-you for your fast response. I must say that it is nice to be heard for once! Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one going through this crap. Please feel free to use my letter (below) in anyway you wish. I was not even aware there were other estrogen replacements available until my husband and I got "connected" on the internet. I really wonder if I even need any HRT since I still have my left ovary. Is it possible to just add soybeans and yams to my diet to supplement the estrogen I might still have? Also, do you know how long it takes for Premarin to be eliminated from your body completely? How do you know if you even need it, is there a blood test or something that a Dr. can take? In re-reading your letter, I am amazed to find out there are so many alternatives to Premarin. I was not informed of any of them by either Dr. I saw. I guess I trusted them too much. Not any more.
I totally agree with Dr. Wright on the use of pregnant mares urine for treatment. I mean if you sit there and think about it, it is ludicrous. I didn't even know Premarin was made from that until I started looking up the drugs I have to take everyday on the "net". Being raised on a farm in Eastern Washington, I am an avid horse lover and it hurts me to know that people actually do this for the sake of medicine. Who started this? A man who has no clue about menopause and women? I will look at your flyer as soon as I can and print it out and probably send it to my sister-in-law in Spokane, Washington. She has raised and bred horses too. She knows a lot of people in the horse arena. Maybe she will get some more flyers out. Again, thank-you for your response and I do know one thing, I am not ever going to take that drug again. D.R.

Subject: Premarin

(first letter) I thought I was the only one going crazy! My husband and I, finally got hooked up to the Internet and I am totally amazed at the information I can find here! I just recently STOPPED taking Premarin because it didn't help me. I am 41 and had a hysterectomy last April of 98. I thought I was starting to go through menopause at that time. NO it's my hormones.... I live in Alaska.....where most major medical are sent to Seattle. At least someone finally found out, here (in Alaska) that I had a thyroid problem. I had asked Drs. in the Seattle area to check it. Nothing wrong there...so they said. Well, the last miscarriage my doctor said it might be my thyroid. Now I'm 41 and I have had a hysterectomy. My left ovary was left in. My Dr. said I would probably need some HRT; i.e. Premarin. I had taken it since last May of 98. A few weeks ago I realized just what it was doing to me.
Heartburn, more moodiness than when I was bleeding all the time, lethargy, forgetfulness. I felt almost as bad when I was bleeding all the time as when I was taking this crap! Then I found out, when we got hooked up on the internet, exactly where it came from.....How in the world can a pregnant mare's URINE help me??? Something is not right with this picture. I have thyroid problems, I have high blood pressure, I am about 50 pounds overweight (no thanks to my thyroid) and my Dad had a stroke at 50. This is supposed to help me? I was STUPID - I listened to my Dr. at the time and went on the Premarin... have had heart palpitations, and everything I eat gives me heartburn. Not fun, let alone what it's done to everything else in my body!
I do NOT endorse Premarin for anything! I have had nothing but problems with it and have taken myself off of it. If my Dr. doesn't like it, tough, it's my body and I know how I felt while on it and while I'm not on it. Plus I am an avid horse lover and rider. I can't imagine going through that just to pee in a cup for a human. I have had my share of losing babies, It's really hard to imagine even thinking of going through what those poor mares have to go through, just getting pregnant to serve a human and having their babies ripped away and sold for meat. That's crap!!
I figure I still have my left ovary, let's let nature take it's course! How long have women been having babies?? Everybody wants to interfere with everything! Why should I be so different just because I had a hysterectomy? I was already headed into menopause, so it happened sooner than I planned. I am not going to take pregnant mares urine to help me any more. All that did was complicate the whole situation. It's really easy to boycott this thing...don't take Premarin or anything related to it, or anything made by Wyeth-Ayerst.
Don't we know how our bodies are supposed to feel and be? I think it's time we really take a stand and tell our doctors how we feel and don't let them tell us how we should feel! JUST WANT TO SAY - PREMARIN SUCKS!!! D.R.

I have just read information reguarding Premarin and hrt, chemical and natural. I was asked to take this therapy more than ten years ago and did not because I am young and with a family history of cancer, I firmly chose one evil over the other. I have now had two fractures and ten years later, in my early thirties, I am facing the questions again as to why I am not protecting myself with hrt. BECAUSE I AM SCARED AND NOT INFORMED ENOUGH. I AM NOT YET CONVINCED TO PUT SOMETHING INTO MY BODY THAT IS KNOWN TO CAUSE CANCER and God knows what else. You seem to be someone who could have the information I need. If I only knew where to start. If I only knew what to ask. I am home nursing a wrist that I broke (for the second time) and only today do I feel that I am getting somewhere. That my fight for this is valid to someone other than me. If you receive this please send me a note. I want to make informed decisions. Thanks for your time. D.F.

I would not mind at all that you use my story (below) in your collection. In fact, most that I had read there were those of women with menopause type of problems and would probably be of great value to someone out there who reads my story. To show the point, this could happen to a woman who isn't menopausal. When I first heard of how Premarin was made, I was appalled and disgusted, and if I could possibly sway someone else not to take this horrible medication, would gladly do so. I would also like you to know that a good friend of mine is menopausal at the moment and keep telling her over and over the bad side effects and how the drug is manufactured. She went to the ob/gyn and he tried to prescribe it for her.. She flatly refused!!! Along my merry way, I will let as many people as I can, know the bad side effects and the inhumane way its produced. In closing, I will let you know that I plan on writing to the company themselves, as well as an editor, and explain my plight. I've never been more outraged in my life.. Here I want to give life to a baby, and felt like mine was being robbed from me. If I can be of any further assistance, please contact me. What your fighting for is a worthy cause and should be addressed as a completely valid complaint by the medical and any one with a heart. J.B.

Subject: Came across your web site about prempro...

(First letter)
I am 34 years old and normally consider myself quite healthy. My main problems in the past have been miscarriages (have had 4 total). Finally in October, 1998 (after that m/c) went to see an RE. He found something in my uterus and offered surgical removal while preserving my fertility. During surgery, he found I had a syndrome called Asherman's (uterine adhesions). I would like to add, prior to the surgery he put me on Provera. Almost immediately after taking it, I started to get severe migraine headaches. After surgery he prescribed this medication named Premarin. I had no idea what it was, all I was told basically, is that it was estrogen replacement and that I needed it to rebuild the uterine wall back up. He told me to take the Premarin for 3 weeks, then start the Provera for 7 days. Needless, to say, my blood pressure was sky high and actually felt like I was going to have a stroke for over a month. I'm usually a pretty active person and enjoy most of the activities of a 34 year old healthy woman. That wasn't the case in December. I had lost all desire to function, the headaches were the most painful I've ever had in my life!!! I decided to take the bull by the horns, so to speak, and called my doc about the horrible side effects... He actually RECOMMENDED me to stay on these medications. I was shocked!!! After making myself quite clear about the terrible side effects, he was encouraging me to stay on them... I do not plan on receiving any more medical care from this physician because of this.

I believe I know my own body well enough to safely say.. THESE DRUGS are dangerous.. at any age!!! I'm glad to have found your web site about the side effects. For a while, I thought it was just me.. and in addition, even more disgusted how the drug is manufactured... I've always been an animal lover and would never condone the abuse of an animal for my sole benefit. In closing, just wanted to thank you for turning on the light for me. J.B.

Subject: Premarin/Provera

In 1997 I asked my doctor for some help in dealing with my current 'hot flashes' and she decided to put me on both Premarin and Provera. Her reasoning was 'because I have Von Willebrands Bleeding Disorder I should just stop bleeding altogether.' I first thought this was great! Then reality set in. At 38 I began a early change of life. Until 1997 I was doing okay, then all of a sudden severe hot flashes began to occur. All I wanted was some help in dealing with this change my body was going through. In the 30 days I was on the medication my body swelled up like I was 9 months pregnant, my skin felt 'crawly' all the time, I began to fall apart. I felt people were always watching me, I had crying fits over nothing, yet I was told that "your body will adjust and all will be ok." So daily I just told my husband that 'it will get better' only it didn't.
Finally I told the doctor what was going on and she felt that I should only take the drug every other day instead of everyday. She felt it would help my hormones adjust. It didn't. The end came when at work one day I just knew I couldn't go on. I paged my husband to come and get me and then realized I had to answer the phone when he called back and that at that time was terrifying for me. He just showed up and I just kept telling him I was sick and had to go home. A few days later I began research on herbs and have been on herbs ever since and feel so much better. I still experience hot flashes but not as intense. I don't recommend this drug to anyone! Not after what I went through. Today I'm still heavy, but suddenly went down a size and a half and am wondering if this drug which I only took for 30 days but played such havoc on my body, is finally leaving me and bringing my body back to normal. In all the information I have seen on Premarin/Provera they say you can gain weight but nothing about the length of time it takes for you to (1) lose the weight or (2) when the drug fully leaves your body. Any info you have would be appreciated. A.C.

Letter Mailed to my physician assistant.
I am writing this letter because my sister said something is wrong "this is not like you" as I had uncontrollable crying for the second day while talking to her. We discussed what possibly was wrong and any recent changes...which was the Premarin I took immediately after my appointment with you to review my blood test....to make a long story short...test results showed hormone levels out of the range of "normal," an indicator of menapause. You gave me free samples of Premarin. I started taking Premarin immediately, one a day. I am on my 5th day and will not take anymore for several reasons. 1) uncontrollable crying followed with extreme feelings of anger, 2) irritabiltity, 3) nervousness, 4) comments from my sister on my unusual behavior "this is not like you." I would prefer the hot flashes & the aging process than Premarin. There probably are some healthier alternatives. My sister recommended I do some research like I would normally do but didn't this time.
In this day of quick fixes, it seems so much easier to trust in the "doctor" to know what is best instead taking responsibilty for my own health. I am guilty of not taking responsibility for my own health. I am guilty of not taking the time to determine my choices. I am trained in the area of research but have been lazy in acting on it. It is a true shame that I had to go through pain & cause others pain with my unusual behavior. Next time I come in I would like to discuss some alternatives. I don't believe the Lord wanted me to take medicine made from horse urine.

(Second letter) I have petitioned my gyn doc to submit a request for plant based medications. This issue will be brought up before our P&T committee in January. If I can find documentation to show that plant based or synthetic drugs are cheaper, there is a good chance the committee will approve it and may even replace Premarin completely. I don't know what drugs other military hospitals carry, each base has it's own pharmacuetical (?) committee which decides what medications to stock. B.M.

(First letter) I just finished reading your web page. Thank you for enlightening many of us on the horrible conditions these mares live in. I'm in the military and my doctor prescribed premarin to counteract the side effects from Lupron (hot flashes, bone loss, etc.) After reading your web page I contacted our pharmacy about switching to a plant based estrogen. Premarin is the only hormone they carry!!! I was shocked and upset (my husband and I have 2 horses and love them as children). I have started an awareness campaign and hope to get many other people involved. Maybe, if our voices are loud enough, we can make a small difference. B.M.

Thanks for the great info. One easy thing we can all do is ask our doctors to stop prescribing Premarin. If they refuse, change doctors and let them know why. After all, why would you want to go to a doctor who not only doesn't care about suffering, but also isn't concerned about the serious side effects? J.C.

I was appalled by what I saw on your site, but extremely glad I found out what I did. I am currently taking Prempro. I was searching for info on side effects of estrogen. I'm seeing my doctor soon to change my prescription to a synthethic or plant-based version. Anyway, would you have a problem with me printing hard copies of your text to distribute free to women who don't have internet access and need to know? I also intend to write to some of those places you mentioned. Thanks. K.A.

Subject: Alternatives to Premarin

Thanks for the information about hormone-replacement alternatives. I fear animal-based estrogens because of the very high instance of cancer (including breast cancer) and heart disease in my mother's side of the family. I only recently learned how they get estrogens from horses and I'm appalled and angry. But when I try to share the information with others, I get put down in no uncertain terms. Is there any alternative estrogen-replacement therapy you especially recommend? I am already in the first stages of osteoporosis -- I'm 62, slight of frame, already lost 1 inch of height. I hike and walk and lift weights at home.J.B.

To make a long story short, I'm lucky to be alive. I was only on PremPro for 7 weeks when I experienced crushing chest pain and an inability to breathe. After hospitalization and misdiagnosis I contacted my family physician who had the good sense to refer me for a scan. Pulmonary emboli (blood clots) were detected in my right lung. I am now on anticoagulants but I am alive. My life has changed. I blame no one, however, it would appear that this is a fatal side effect of Premarin and Provera. I don't think it is as rare as it is made out to be and would appreciate anyone who has had adverse effects, or if you know of anyone who has to please tell your story to the menopause news groups to try to prevent the same thing happening to other women. Subject: Prempro - A Deadly Drug

Three months after beginning Prempro, with no health problems in my life, normal to low blood pressure and very active, I suddenly had a stroke. One year later, I had a severe blood clot that totally consumed the vein in my left leg from my hip to my toes. Pain so horrible, even the best known narcotic analgesic, morphine, did not make the pain subside, and I prayed to die.
I didn't know it was Prempro causing my problem until several months later when I had a blood clot. A local doctor that knew me personally, asked if I was taking hormones and if so, what kind. When I told him Prempro, he said stop taking it immediately!! He said it is a well know fact in the medical community that these hormones are killing women. He checked my blood and found that it was so thick that it was hardly moving, due to Prempro. After several months of two shots daily in my stomach of Heparin and 12 ML of Coumadin, my blood problem got a little better. This week, however, my leg began to swell again, huge, -- and I had to start the same treatment again. My health is gone forever because of Prempro. This drug is a killer. Get Off.

I am saddened if these events are happening to some "Premarin" mares. But I know for a fact that it does not happen to all mares. Maybe it's because the farm I know of raises quality registered horses and only sells urine as a by-product. One of my beloved horses came from one of theses farms as a one-year old, as did her twin looking half-brother. They are double registered show quality horses that were not being sold for slaughter. The breeders of theses particular horses are horse breeders first and foremost. By selling urine on the side they can better afford to care for their animals. So please continue your campaign to boycott Premarin but don't lump all the farms into the bad heap. There are also bad breeders who beat their show horses to make them seem more spirited. R. J.

Hi! My name is Linda and I had a total hysterectomy ten years ago. I am 40 years old and I went off of my estrogen (Ogen) eleven months ago. I now use progesterone cream twice a day, and take calcium supplements. I work out every other day and eat well balanced meals and also take Solitron vitamins from the GNC. I read your webpage and was stunned to see what they will do to make medicine that they aren't even sure is safe for humans. I feel better since I have been off Ogen, but I am so concerned because two of my doctors (both men) have been pushing me to go back on the Ogen. They both talk of the osteoporosis, heart disease, blood cholesterol, and the significant aging that will supposedly happen to me now that I quit taking the estrogen. I quit because of the migraines, the breast lumps of which I had a lumpectomy and a core-needle biopsy of my left breast, and the circulation problems I was having on this pill. I need to find out if I really need to take estrogen again or can I just supplement my diet with soy and maybe the black cohosh for the heat flashes and hopefully I will be healthy. I get sick of taking a pill that causes my body so many problems. If you can help me with this, I would sure appreciate it. I would like to know if the alternatives would work for me, or because I have had a total hysterectomy, does that mean I will have major problems like the doctors say unless I go back on the estrogen? I think your web page is great, and has been helpful. My mother has been taking Premarin for a few years now, and about 6 months ago developed a bad rash across her back & into her hairline. She's been diagnosed with Urticaria, or hives, and one of the causes can be hormone fluctuation. Is it possible the Premarin is doing this? Her doctor says no, but since he's a big proponent of Premarin, he may not be impartial. I'd really appreciate your thoughts. C.T.

You have done a good job of putting this website together. It is terrible what these drug companies are doing to the horses as well as to the women of the world. SHAME on them and anyone who mistreats animals. And Shame on us who are not educated about this. Now that I know the truth, I would like to help spread the correct information. Many women on Premarin dont know how it was made. I asked my doctor to give me the plant HRT, but he is still giving me the bad stuff. I tried Prempro for 3 months and got very depressed. Then I tried another with testosterone (made my stomach upset). Now I am trying Combipatch (new this month). I dont know how crazy I am going to get, but in the meantime, I would like to help with the protest, and if you have any suggestions please advise. Thanks again for all this information. R.T.

(Male-to-female transsexuals require hormone replacement therapy similar to post-menopausal women, but in higher doses while pre-operative. Regards, N.H.

Subject: Wonderful Page!

I wanted to let you know how informative your webpage on PMU ranching was. I had no idea that such cruelties could be bestowed upon horses for such a thing.
The whole reason that I found your page is that, to be honest, I had no idea what PMU was. I am working at some boarding stables, and I was told I might be interested in raising a PMU foal. Not knowing what it was, I searched on the web and found your page. There is a local PMU ranch here in Central Alberta. It has been here for some time, and I knew they collected mare urine, though I did not know what PMU was until now. My father knows the owner, and I am going to see if I can look around. I am considering changing my major in college to Equine Science, so I have a legitimate reason to look around - As if inspecting it for cruelty isn't enough! I know your page is probably quite busy, and you receive lots of e-mails, and I am just one viewer, but if I find anything substantial, I'll let you know - As well as the local SPCA.
Again, thank you for opening my eyes to such cruelty! It is rare to find a page as influential as yours! D.B.

Two weeks ago my Mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is 52 years old and now has a disease that does not run in my family. She has been on Premarin for about one year. Four months ago she had a mamogram that showed nothing. During a self examination she noticed a lump and went to the doctor. After it was removed we found out it was 4.5cm. It is called "fast growing" Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma (the most common type of breast cancer). Hopefully we caught it in time. Like other family members I am trying to locate as much information about breast cancer and the possible causes which sent me to your webpage. Have you heard of similar stories about breast cancer and Premarin? L.M.

Subject: Prempro Experience

Two weeks ago I was having heavy bleeding while on Prempro and my internal medicine physician sent me to a gyn for a uterine lining scrape (all benign). The gyn told me he does not prescribe Prempro at this time unless it is in conjunction with another prescription for controlled bleeding.
When I asked if I could throw it away, he said, don't throw it away, put it on your plants, it's good fertilizer!! I stopped taking it that day and have finally stopped bleeding and am feeling great. It was prescribed for me for the supposed heart benefits (my mother passed away at 51 with diabetes related heart disease), which according to this gyn, the heart benefits have not been proven and won't be for 10-12 years of trials. Prempro was also supposed to help me with insomnia (it didn't), tiredness (it didn't) weight loss (it didn't). I am 56 and through menopause so was really stupid to take this drug in the first place, but you tend to trust your physician.
My gyn recommended a Women's Clinic nearby who he works closely with so I am making an appointment this week and not returning to my old internal medicine physician!! I was on Prempro for a year and she kept saying the bleeding would stop!! M.P.

I was very happy to see your Web page. I have been working on the Premarin issue myself out of Portland, Oregon. I created a brochure of Premarin alternatives for a local animal rights group, People for Animal Rights (P.A.R.) It's a one page fold-out (two sides) which lists alternatives in three categories: those you get from a mainstream medical doctor, those you could get from a naturopath, and those you can get from a herbalist. If you are interested, please let me have your address and I'll send it out. I'd also recommend Susun Weed's books, MENOPAUSAL YEARS and HEALING WISE, Ash Tree Publishing, Woodstock, NY. I trust her advice on the herbal alternatives. L.C.

You may surely post my letters. The other letters I read on your site were encouraging to me. My doctor has always discussed everything with me and he's a real straight shooter. If he were not, I would have another doctor! I guess it's because of my age, but I don't have trouble relating to professional people any more. It helps to remember that the Doctor works for me. Anyway, there is no excuse for sarcasm. My druggist laughed when I first said I wouldn't take Premarin. He thought it was because it was made out of urine. When I explained that it was because of the cruelty involved he was taken aback. Said he had never heard that, and that from a druggist! I really don't think that most people have stopped to think about just how the urine is collected, they just giggle at the fact that it is urine and let it go at that. Education is the key and once again, I thank you for your site. B.R.

Thanks for your prompt reply. My visit with my Dr. went very well thanks to your site. I printed out the page of alternatives and the flyer. I asked my Dr. if he just routinely prescribed Premarin or if he offered alternatives and he said regretfully that sometimes he just prescribed Premarin but that from now on he would be glad to discuss it with his patients and inform them of the alternatives. I felt like we dealt a blow for the mares with one visit! He also said Wyeth was really feeling the heat and would probably have to figure out an alternative. I belong to a small investment group and we are spreading the word about boycotting the other products made by Wyeth. I can't understand why a company would continue this practice when they could pursue the plant research and produce a kinder and, apparently, safer product.

Thank you so much for this site. I have an appointment with my doctor today to discuss menopause. I am 53 and just having all the symptoms. When I asked him about the way Premarin was harvested he said all that I had heard was true but that in 20 years of practice I was the only woman who had ever asked about it. He was quick to offer alternatives, particularly the yam. Why isn't this front page news? How do natural treatments for menopause symptoms work with medication for high blood pressure, and a bowel disease (Crohns Disease).
I take Zesteril and Ziac for high blood pressure and Prednisone for the bowel disease. I had a hysterectomy last spring where my left ovary and uterus were removed. Then in a big surprise, I underwent emergency surgery to have my right ovary removed this spring. I was initially put on .625 mg. of Premarin, once a day. After problems with hot flashes, the doctor pushed it to twice a day (including at bedtime).
Now my whole system is out of wack. I go for nights without sleep. Last night I went to bed at 10:30 p.m. and by 8:15 a.m. this morning I had only slept 10 minutes. I'm hot all night, sweating like crazy and the whole nine yards. I intend to talk to my doctor about another course of treatment that does not include Premarin, but I am concerned about my other health issues. I did notice last week that my blood pressure was even higher than normal. I guess this is related to this interruption of my body.
I did read some informtion about soy products and vitamin E. Can you share anything else with me. I am only 36 years old, Black, beautiful woman (inside and outside). But right now, I'm going crazy, literally. Thanks for your response. J.W.

I must thank you for bringing this to my attention....I will pass this info onto my mother and mostly my daughter....who will be a mother herself. Subject: Re: Premarin site

I haven't thoroughly explored your website, just read the front page, but did save it to Fav. Places and will pass it on to everyone I know - most of whom are menopausal.
The first time I was given Premarin, it was by a male doctor when I went for a pap smear. He just noted my age and told me it was time that I started taking hormones. When I questioned him, he started in on heart disease and osteoporosis, acted like I was a total moron for questioning him. Later I learned that there were blood tests to determine one's hormonal level. That was never mentioned; he went solely by my age, which would have been 48 at the time, I think.
The first problem was that I noticed the pill instructions were different from what the dr. had said. Called the pharmacy - they'd goofed. Had typed on them to take each one daily. Wrong info. And when I took them, I think I started, what seemed to me to be, hemorrhaging from the first pill or two. It was really bad. Two "heavy-duty" Tampax together wouldn't get me through an hour. And it wouldn't stop. I called him, explained it to the nurse, and got him to call back, only to tell me to stop taking the pills. Nothing whatever to say about the hemorrhaging. He acted annoyed that I was bothering him. It finally diminished but it took days and days of me running to the store, stocking up on Tampax and wondering how long could this go on.
I next went to a woman gyn. - 2 yrs later or so. Told her of my problem and she put me on low-dosage Premarin. I had the same problem, stopped taking the pills and called the office to tell them. She, at least, did call back and acted concerned, had me keep a chart. She, also, never mentioned a blood test to determine my hormonal level.
I am now 55 and through menopause (still have occasional hot flashes), and would LIKE to take some kind of safe HRT, and am getting up the courage to go back for a pap smear, but now I know what to insist on if the subject comes up again!
So, that was my experience with Premarin. Also read some book, can't even remember the title (had a green leaf on the cover...) or author, and I just gave it away, but it said that the majority of women who start HRT never continue past a few months or at most a year. I don't even want HRT to begin with. I realize that women live longer, etc., but does that mean we have to do this to be healthy? I don't think so. I plan to print out your flyer and pass the word along. It's barbaric what is being done to animals in the cause of harming women. Again, thank you for the information.

Subject: More info...

I've always been appalled by the treatment of farm animals, particularly the pregnant mares used for harvesting urine. I'm very encouraged to see that someone cares enough to put up a web site about the issue and apparently has the sense to realize (I hope) that some usage of animals is done responsibly and humanely, particularly in scientific research. You point out on your site that there are effective alternatives to Premarin. That is most certainly true. What you *don't* point out is that most of those alternatives are safer and more effective than Premarin, and many are even cheaper. Premarin is a mixture of rather weak estrogens that cause lots of loading of the liver. For women on the typical postmenopausal dose of .625 mg/da, I suppose it's not that big a problem, but for a transsexual woman such as myself or for other women on much larger doses of Premarin (e.g. 5 - 10 mg/da), it is a significant factor.
I take estradiol valerate, an oil-based injectable that costs about $20 for a 50 mg vial. The recommended postmenopausal dosage is 20 mg/mo, so we're talking about a monthly cost of $8. (I use twice that dosage.) Liver loading is minimal, the effects are phenomenal, and the side effects are almost nil. I understand that estradiol cypionate is even more potent and cheaper, but I don't know anyone with experience with the drug.
Anyway, you should stress on your page not just that alternatives are available but that the alternatives are better, safer, and cheaper. As you point out, they're just not as heavily promoted. Peace and good hormones,
