. SCREAMING TO BE HEARD: Hormonal Connections Women Suspect...and Doctors Ignore By Elizabeth Vliet, M.D. A very comprehensive guide to the subject of hormones, including HRT, PMS, fibromyalgia, migraines, thyroiditis, allergies and so on. See chapter 5 especially on blood testing for hormone levels. Learn about important studies done by Drs. White and Campbell, two leading menopause researchers in England (back in 1978-1982). These studies show that the conjugated equine estrogens are about three times more potent in stimulating the liver production of renin substrate, which causes increased blood pressure. These studies have been virtually ignored in the U.S. - WHY? V.H. All of the readers of this book give it the highest 5 star rating at the Amazon.com website.

BITTER PILLS By Stephen Fried. Fried has uncovered the evils of the pharmaceutical industry, which often places profits above public safety. America would do better, he asserts, to follow Europe's philosophy of pharmacovigilance, or research into drug safety. Because the Food and Drug Administration oversees the regulation of what amounts to a full quarter of the gross national product, Americans are in dire danger of being hurt from pills that are insufficiently researched and hustled through the approval process. While 10,000 deaths occur each year due to illegal drugs, Fried writes, up to 200,000 people died as a result of reactions to seemingly harmless prescription or over - the - counter ones.

Natural Hormone Replacement for Women over 45:By Jonathan Wright, M.D. A good introduction to HRT. A little book with lots of information. Especially good for its analysis of Premarin and Provera as dangerous and completely foreign to a woman's body. An insightful commentary on the PEPI study and Dr. Bernadine Healy's reactions.V.H.

Dr. Susan Love's Hormone Book: Making Informed Choices About Menopause In an empowering and demystifying book about menopause, Dr. Susan Love, a noted breast surgeon and women's health advocate, writes with her coauthor, Karen Lindsey. "I can't tell you in this book whether or not you should take hormones, but I can spell out the pros and cons, examining the various promises that have been made for menopausal hormone therapy, and letting you know what the side effects and dangers can be." Particularly fascinating is the second chapter titled "The Medicalization of Menopause." Love's examination of how women in other cultures actually look forward to menopause, and of how the medical establishment and the pharmaceutical industry have a vested interested in making menopause a disease, is a convincing one. It puts menopause and hormone therapy into a whole new light.

She now has estradiol shots every few weeks and takes bioidentical progesterone daily, which has finally ended her terrible, heart-wrenching rollercoaster. She really understands hormones!V.H.
