THE TRUTH ABOUT PREMARIN

PREMARIN SIDE EFFECTS REPORTED BY WOMEN
AND DENIED BY DOCTORS

+ Letters 2000

{Ed. Comment} HRT has repeatedly been in the news last year and into 2001. Studies are continuing to prove that estrogen is not that great after all. The NBC Nightly News had two segments on HRT on September 12 and 13, 2000. Although estrogen (ie. Premarin) has been on the market for almost 60 years - there are still no definitive answers and the WHI (Women's Health Initiative begun in 1993) which will end approximately 2005, may actually bring even more unanswered questions. Prevention of heart disease and osteoporosis are two of the main reasons Premarin has been used for. There is now evidence that Premarin does not prevent heart attacks and can actually raise triglycerides. It does not prevent osteoporosis, merely slows bone loss by 2.5%. The Jan. 2000 study by the National Cancer Institute found that women increase their risk of breast cancer by10% for each year a woman is on it compared to non-users.

Estrogen has been touted as a miracle cure-for all kinds of problems with little evidence to back it up. Experts say look at the ads by the pharmaceuticals (Wyeth-Ayerst) that perpetuate the myth that it will keep your skin young looking by using beautiful young models. The product insert sheet says "you may have heard that estrogen will keep your skin moist and young looking - there is no proof of this." The ONLY thing Premarin has FDA approval for is prevention of osteoporosis - which it does not prevent as you will learn in the following letters. There are other safer alternatives for prevention of osteoporosis than 30 years on estrogen - consider weight lifting, lifestyle changes, adding calcium and Vitamin D to your diet.

The following are letters from women who have experienced very adverse side effects while on Premarin or a combination of Premarin and Provera (or Cycrin, generic Provera) - PremPro or PremPhase. You may have experienced these very same side effects, but when you ask your doctor "could Premarin be the cause whether it be weight gain, bloating, migraine headaches, depression, leg cramps, nausea, feeling tired, loss of libido, nausea, dizziness, tingling in the fingers, asthma, numbness, itching feet, heaviness on the chest, swollen ankles, a significant rise in blood pressure, high triglycerides, stroke, blood clot or breast cancer - you will more than likely hear an emphatic "NO, Premarin did not cause your side effects." A strange thing happens though, when women stop taking the Premarin - their side effects disappear (unless you have developed breast cancer or died of a stroke, heart attack or blood clot). How do the doctors explain that? Doctors obviously will never admit a drug they prescribed caused you serious health problems. Please be sure to read the insert sheet that comes with your prescription, printed in very tiny 6 point type, (a magnifying glass is helpful) these side effects can and do occur and much more often than the medical community would like you to think they occur. Doctors rarely discuss any of these side effects or inform women of any alternatives to pregnant mare's urine.

Premarin at Age 11

I was put on Premarin for 2 years at the University of Iowa Med Center to stop me from growing anymore (I was 5'9"). Have you heard of this? If you know of any articles which address growth suppression in young girls with hormones, I would be really interested. Thanks

I was using a hormone patch and did not think there were any side effects, but I lost my insurance coverage and it became rather expensive. Doctor prescribed Premarin and, having digestive problems with many medications that I feel are more important to take for me, decided not to take the Premarin. After seeing all the testimonials here, NO ONE will EVER try to make me take that stuff, EVER. Just had a bone density test and the results are not in, but if there IS bone loss in my case, I will assume that it will be gradual and will not give in to the pressures of my GYN to take Premarin. Having post-surgical menopause, I don't find the effects really bad - occasional hot flushes which may actually be caused by other medicine. I have fibromyalgia and CFIDS and there's a lot of medicine which acts weirdly with us - am certainly not taking anything unless it is ESSENTIAL! (like the pain killers I NEED)... Thanks for enlightening me! J.L.

Thanks for recommending Healthy Woman by Monistat for hot flashes.   Unfortunately, after a few days on it, I had a bad migraine just like I had from Premarin and all the other estrogens I tried.  I'm taking a long break from trying anything else for now.  I hope this helps those other women who can't tolerate HRT. Thanks for helping all of us! A.L.

I knew I had a Research paper due as a final in my English class at Sierra College, so I figured that this would be a subject worth researching. Please send me what you can I would really appreciate it. Thank You and Good Luck, J.W.

Hi, I attend the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro Nova Scotia, Canada. I am working on a presentation on PMU farms and the alternatives to premarin. I was wondering if you could tell me how recent the table of alternatives is? I know a plant based alternative CENESTIN is also available and I was wondering why it was not listed?? Thank you for your time,

Subject: November Update

I thought I would give you the latest update with how my last blood test came out as regards my triglycerides since I ceased Premarin in August. All the doctors were sceptical that it would make much difference, but I was adamant. Guess who was right! When the results came back my doctor said he was quite shocked to see how much they had dropped even though they are still not normal yet. The only thing I did differently was stop the HRT. I don't think they have been this low in years. Whether the medical profession actually takes any notice I have no idea, but it has shown them to be quite wrong. Not all doctors are arrogant but having worked with them for over 30 years I know how they often think, due to them expressing opinions to anyone who will listen. As a nurse it is very frustrating and is one reason that many nurses refuse to stay in the profession, especially given their attitude toward women. I could go on for ages but I won't. Bye for now.

I recently stopped taking Premarin.  I had awful migraines for 5 years. They started when I started taking this Rx.  I consulted several specialists and they all assured me that it wasn't the Premarin.  I finally just took control and stopped cold turkey and all the migraines disappeared.  I have experimented with other forms of estrogen and still got migraines.  I now take Evista and use Vagifem for vaginal dryness.  If my choice is: hot flash or migraines- there is no contest.  I have spoken to 2 female friends who experienced the same migraines. Thank you for your interesting web site.

Subject: Going off HRT

I have found your web site very interesting. I am 64 years of age and had been on HRT for almost 18 years. In May 2000 my doctor counseled me to go off HRT because of the reports of the increased risk of breast cancer in long- time users. He also related that some studies were showing that HRT users do not get the heart protection that they originally thought. I was fortunate when I was on HRT that I did not have the side effects that so many women do. Now I would like to know what symptoms or side effects a woman might experience when she stops using HRT. After I was off HRT about one month I started having hot flashes (they are not unbearable, but I do not like them). I also do not sleep well (this is not every night, but there are many nights when I do not get a good night's rest).

During the summer I noticed that my ankles were swollen (thickened is the term the doctor used). They are still like this and it is uncomfortable and concerns me because I normally have very bony ankles. Another thing is that for about 6 weeks now I have been having tingling in my left hand.

In reading your web site I noticed that these last two items were things that women experienced when they started using HRT. I wonder if there is any possibility that they could be related to my stopping the use of HRT. Thank you for listening and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
E.G.

This has been a great day for me now that I have read this article!! I am 39, and have gone through menopause at age 36/37. When menopause was diagnosed in 1999 I was put on Premarin, and Medroxyprogesterone. I started taking it February of 1999, and off of it May 1999 because I wasn't feeling well. Feb of 2000, after seeing an internist and being told of the high risk of bone density loss etc. I went back on both!! Through the past months I slowly, but surely began to feel an increase in tiredness/ fatigue. Last month when I took the Medroxyprogesterone from the 14th- 25th I felt like I was getting the flu. I dismissed this, but made a small mental note!! This month when I started taking the Medroxyprogesterone, the flu-like symptoms returned. There was no doubt in my mind that it was the Medroxyprogesterone.
I am one who will argue with doctors. I have had bad experiences in the past with doctors in the military, and out. I used to have panic attacks years ago at the onset of the hypothroidism, and there are not many doctors believe this!! I have learned not to believe in the medical profession, but where else can we go? I do realize that there probably is a small percentage of doctors that believe in actually treating the patient, and not just seeing dollar signs when they see patients in his or her waiting rooms. Let's face it girls, not many doctors want to treat us "Winey" females. I will keep looking for a good doctor.
Why is today a good day? Because I read the aricle, some of the letters, and now I know what I have to do!!! Say good-bye to hrt. L.L.

Having read your website on hormone drugs and their effect on women and the many letters requesting more detailed information, may I recommend that you advise your readers to look up http://www.google.com on the internet and ask GOOGLE to answer their questions.  I have done this most succesfully - any language, any question - it answers them all most professionally. The more people get to know GOOGLE the less doctors will be able to abuse patients. Enter HUMAN ANATOMY in the search block and your'e on your way. If you enter Premarin you get the full works on the subject!  The answer to the dilemma lies in computer literacy.  Try entering Dr. Lorraine Day, MD and do a search. Then try Dr. John R. Lee, MD and do likewise.

Try http://www.warnerbooks.com for advice which may be of additional help to readers. I hope this helps all people who are asking questions.

Subject: How long does Premarin remain in the system?

Your website has been a great source of solace for me. I have been thinking I was going crazy these last two months. I had a hysterectomy (one ovary removed) two months ago. I was immediately put on a .625 dose of Premarin. Two weeks later, I had panic attacks and excessive weeping. When I called my doctor, I was told to double the dosage because I was experiencing a hormone imbalance. When I went to see my doctor three weeks later, my hormone levels were extremely high. I was then having more frequent panic attacks, foggy thinking, weeping and depression. I have been off the Premarin for a month, yet I still feel anxious, have sleeping problems, and my ankles are still swollen. My doctor refuses to admit that it is the Premarin. She prescribed anti-depressants, Xanax and gave me the name of a shrink!!! I have resorted to using Xanax for sleep, but I refuse to take the antidepressants. I wasn't like this before I went on Premarin. A recent hormone check showed my levels to be back in the normal range, but I am still having problems. Do you have any idea how long this stuff stays in one's system? I would like to have an idea of when I can feel normal again. Also, I am allergic to horses (although I own and ride two). Could this be a source of my problem? I didn't know what this stuff was made of when I was taking it. Now I am horrified for more reasons than one!!!Thanks. D.R.

Thanks for the information. I am still having anxiety attacks and depression, but the depression may just be from me worrying about myself. I am going to a shrink today who supposedly is not a pill-pusher, so maybe I will get some help and some answers. I think a lot of what is still happening to me is panic disorder because I am so afriad of having another attack (like I had with the hormone imbalance) that I work myself into an attack. It is a vicious cycle. I never had these problems before the Premarin. I've been off it for six weeks, but I still have swollen ankles, so I don't think it's out of my system yet!!! Go ahead and publish my letter. I want everyone to know what different things this alien poison can do to us. Don't worry, no one will talk me into EVER taking it again. D.R.

I applaud your courageousness. I am appalled at that Pennsylvania bill HB 590 and will gladly add my support in the form of a letter. As a breeder and lover of horses I remain steadfast in my pursuit to abolish Premarin, Prempro, etc. one prescription at a time from my medical practice. All my new female patients, as well as my colleagues have heard my schpeel on how this drug is attained and the inhumane treatment of horses used for the manufacture of Premarin. The drug companies have come out with the most ridiculous propaganda about Premarin and the world class farms used to collect pregnant mare's urine.
A funny story is when a new drug rep for Premarin showed up at my office. I tried to curtail her words by saying I didn't use it but she pushed me until I unloaded on her. The next week she came back with four color brochures and video tapes of their "breeding farms"....please. I do advocate the use of estrogens in postmenopausal women. However, there are some wonderful synthetically derived estrogens that work as well or better than Premarin.. I believe that Evista is better for the prevention of osteoporosis at least from the most recent data. Good luck in your endeavors.

I just spent two days in the hospital - MRI / CATSCAN / ECOCARDIOGRAM. 4 weeks ago my gyn put me on .625 of Premarin for night sweats - I am 45 and had a partial hysterectomy in 1996. The night sweats stopped - the nausea, dizzyness, tingling in left hand and numbness around jawline, heart palpitations / flutters began. Test results: Ecocardiogram revealed enlargement of left back portion of heart. I was told the Premarin has nothing to do with any of these symptoms. The nuerologist said to not stop taking it that it was very important. We are still waiting for more test results to come in. As of now, I am stopping the Premarin. Could this cause the enlargement? I have barely been able to function since I started taking it.

Thank you for your concern. Yes, I feel great now that I'm off the Premarin. I haven't had any of the symptoms I was having - it took about 5 days to feel back to normal.
I have an appointment next Tuesday with the Cardiologist - he said the enlargement was nothing to worry about, but that we needed to talk. Whatever that means - but my GYN said that he definately agreed that I needed to stop the Premarin and that he was not going to suggest any other treatment until after I met with the Heart doctor and that possibly the menopause could be treated holistically. I have been to my GYN since I was 18 and he knows me very well and I do trust him, so I was relieved he wasn't annoyed when he found out that I quit taking the Premarin.
I'll keep you posted on what the Heart doctor says. I will ask if he thought the Premarin had anything to do with the enlargement. Once again, thank you, T.H.

I was on Prempro for nearly five years. I was diagnosed with breast cancer last March, 1999. I have also have lost libido, lost my waist, and feel lied to by my doctor who told me Prempro had an anitcancer factor in it. I have osteoporosis and he told me it prevented osteporosis. In April 1999 my doctor prescribed Prempro for me as a safeguard against osteoporosis. I am a very healthy 70 year oldwith GERD but no other problems. Labor Day weekend I was taken to the ER and after two days diagnosed with Superior Mesenteric Vein Thrombosis. After two abdominal surgeries in which I lost quite a few inches of small intestines, 36 days in intensive care, almost two months in the Hospital, and several months of home recovery I am doing well. I will be on Coumadin for the rest of my life. I have a very strong feeling that my problems are linked to Prempro but would like your opinion. P.M.

It will certainly be all right to post my letter on your site. If it will make someone aware that these side effects do happen, then I will be pleased to be a part. My problem was a blood clot in the superior mesenteric vein which supplies blood flow to the mesentery which is the covering on the small intestines. This is very rare -- two of my doctors said they had only three cases in their years of practice. I did ask if the Prempro caused it and was told that there was really no way to know for sure but it was very possible. Thank you for your work in making people aware. P.M.

Subject: Premarin Caused High Triglycerides & High Cholesterol

Hi, from Australia!
Wow! I have just read your web site and many things have confirmed my suspicions. I have been on HRT since about 1989 when I was first prescribed Premarin. In early 1993 it was discovered that I had an enormously high cholesterol (18.6) and triglycerides (82) and the doctor stopped it saying that it could have been the Premarin. The blood counts went down extremely quickly when it was ceased along with a diuretic. In the middle of that year I was put on a patch but had an allergy to the glue which resulted in my being prescribed Premarin again as I accepted the doctors explanation of the time. By the end of that year I was very anemic (7.8) but why I was not prescribed any treatment I don't know. Within a short time I found myself in a Coronary Care Unit with chest pain that had not been explained until recently. Throughout this time I have been decidedly unwell but I was told it was depression and at any time I suggested my HRT it was dismissed. Up until six months ago I have suffered extreme tiredness, loss of energy and libido and numerous other symtoms.

I again saw myself in a Coronary Care Unit and unexplained chest pain. It took another 5 months before they discovered I was anemic again, and ended up having a blood transfusion.   Numerous tests later and an unstable iron count, whilst I feel much better, my cholesterol and triglycerides are high and I am now to see a specialist, despite a good diet, exercise etc. I have thought continuously about why and I feel I can link this all to my commencement of Premarin. With the chest pain being linked to the anemia which itself cannot be explained though there does appear to be a disease of the bowel that could be causing it.  After reading your website, and the replies, I believe my suspicions are correct.  What I would like to know is, has there been any studies done on HRT and increased cholesterol and triglycerides or have you any information that at least may support my theory to some degree? If so, could you e-mail it to me please.  I am now 52 years of age, had a hysterectomy at age 29, and though I still have my ovaries, I am rather concerned about this aspect of my health. With an ongoing history of anemia, chest pain, pain in both legs... why? .. burning feet and whatever else, I need answers. None of these started until I took Premarin. How come I have continued for so long I don't know but when you feel so unwell, you concentrate on how your feeling and let everyone else worry about the why. Yesterday I decided I would stop the Premarin and today I looked up your website having only just come online, and I now believe that I have made the right decision.  If in time it proves to be correct I will update with you. Looking forward to hearing from you.   D.S., Toowoomba, Qld Australia

Hello,   Thank you so much for your replies as they are greatly appreciated. I have a copy of the MIMs (Dr's Desk Reference) Australia, on Premarin and many of these problems are listed, even the laboratory tests indicated there could be increased serum triglycerides and phospholipid concentration along with many problems, particularly associated with the liver and endocrine system. As this is the bible of the medical profession, why are they ignoring it? As a nurse I am very familiar with the attitude many of them have, particularly to patient theories. It is recommended that after ceasing Premarin, that repeat blood tests should be done in about 2 months which I will do.  Because of my health problems including depression (yes another one) I did not have the strength to do anything more than work, do what is necessary for my day to day living, often not mentioning anything to the medicos as they always put it down to depression. Being sick made me depressed but many still insist that illness is secondary not the primary cause.   Thankfully, now I am on the road to recovery as I have many of the symptoms treated and a natural health product called USANA, which I am now a distributor for. USANA means true health and promotes OPTIMAL HEALTH and it has made a great deal of difference to my well-being.  Hope to hear from you again.

Subject: Stroke & Premarin

My wife was in perfectly good health, but was advised by a doctor to have a full hysterectomy, including removal of her ovaries. She was reluctant to have the full surgery, but her doctor told her she was at increasing risk not to do so, and that removal of her ovaries was essential. She was never informed of the life-long need for hormonal medication. She is Korean and was dealing with a Korean doctor here in the states, and trusted the physician. She had always had excellent health, ate a very healthy diet and exercised daily.

Two months after the surgery she suffered a stroke that could not be linked to any specific cause, except the medication she was on, which was Premarin. Her stroke physician immediately took her off Premarin tablets, and only months later suggested the use of a patch for a slower dissemination into the body.

I'm interested in whether there are other folks out there who have had strokes that are linked to this drug. I can be reached at sparkr@msn.com.

Subject: Question About Premarin

I have just finished reading information on your website and have found it a real eye-opener. I knew that Premarin was from mare's urine, but didn't realize the cruelty that these horses endured. That information and a possible side effect of this medicine are the reasons I have quit taking Premarin. After a complete hysterectomy 4 years ago, my ob-gyn prescribed Premarin to alleviate possible side effects of menopause. Since I started taking the med 2 days after surgery I never found out if I would even have any menopausal problems. What I need to know is if this medicine causes significant weight gain. Since surgery, I have gained 15-20 pounds and I consider myself an active woman (50 years old). I walk 3-4 miles almost every day and do some weight training 3-4 days/week. I know that I eat healthy - low fat, fiber rich diet, fruit, vegetables, etc.  I am also on a anti-depressant, and need to know if that along with Premarin has caused the weight gain. Please, please respond to this inquiry. Just ask my husband, I haven't been a "happy camper" since the weight gain. Thanks for any help/answers you may have. P.W.

Yesterday I quit taking my PREMARIN. I am 48 years old and I have been taking PREMARIN since I have been 32 after a complete hysterectomy, 16 years ago. I have to go to the doctor once a year or I will not be given my prescription. I suffer from the usual menopausal symptoms if I do not stay on my hormone replacement. This year I refuse to go to another humiliating Dr.'s appt. I do not mind going every 2 years but once a year is too much. I have been doing that for 16 years and never had a problem except I can't sleep, I have gained 40 pounds, have no sex drive and have tingling and numbness in various areas of my body and no energy. The doctor keeps giving me PREMARIN. I started today to do my own research after being told since I was 32 that I would have to stay on this the rest of my life. I know now why he makes me come in every year, he is scared to death of the side effects. I am so mad he did not share with me other alternatives although I did not ask him and he is an older Dr. and probably feels if it is not broke don't fix it. I have been hearing PREMARIN was made from horse urine and that PREMARIN had some side effects but never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined what it was or where it came or how it was produced and a foreign substance to our body and not something our body would absorb naturally. I am appalled and feel lied to and almost raped because I have not been told the truth about the side effects. I am also an animal lover and I feel I have supported this cruelty to horses. I hope I can make it up to them by refusing to take this disgusting drug and by telling everyone I meet there are alternatives and do not take it and back it up with your website with all the answers and resources. THANK THE GOOD LORD FOR YOUR WEBSITE!! S.W.

Subject: Question

I am a 50 year old white female that has been on HRT for just a little more than a year. I was going through menopause with irregular bleedings and some "hot flashes". I went to my ob/gyn for my annual check up, doc did some blood work, informed me that I was in the menopause range and put me on Prempro (0.625mg Premarin and 2.5 mg medroxyprogesterone). One year later I began working out at the YMCA spending a lot of time in the whirlpool and swimming pool, along with physical workout. Much to my surprise in February 2000 I experienced a mense that lasted for a month. I did go to my ob/gyn and after an examination, he increased the progesterone to 5 mg. Two weeks ago I was in Florida, yes, enjoying the water and guess what? For several days I was complaining of cramps, breast tenderness and by George, today I started bleeding, not heavy but bleeding. Besides that, I swear I gained 10 pounds, look 4 months pregnant and breast size increased. And I just noticed on an unopened packet of Prempro it has an orange label telling me to avoid prolong direct sunlight/and or indirect sunlight.
Here are my questions. What happens when I stop taking Prempro? What's the deal with staying out of the sunlight? I am in need of some answers to a decision I am about to make. Thank you. P.P.

Yes, you may use my letter - I noticed I said my left leg stays swollen the most...I meant to say right leg.....and yes, the ER...Dr. knew I was on Prempro!! My daughter just told me of someone she worked with that had shoulder pain and swollen legs and ankles..she had the (angio-p) test she was told she had heart failure and died two days later....I hope to find out whether she was taking a hormone replacement or not....Curious... I haven't told my Endo that I've stopped taking the Prempro....nor my arthritis Dr...who suggested that I take it as a preventative for bone loss. Next appt's though. My tryglicerides were high this last blood test. They haven't been before - they were always normal until Prempro. I also started having vision problems just right after starting Prempro thought it was due to my Diabetes, but now I am wondering about that.....I am seeing a retina specialist. I had no problems when Meno (hit) in fact it was such a relief....not to go through what I went through each month!! Reading all the side effects worried me to begin with...I wondered if osteoporosis wouldn't have been better. My next step is to see if my swollen legs are a blood clot or heart problems. I hope neither. Thank you for telling about how long before this is out of my system...I was wondering. Good Luck spreading the word. J.W.

Ed. Note: I've written this woman telling her she will need to be firm when telling her doctors she is quitting PremPro because most likely they will encourage her to stay on it and also tell her "the symptoms you're experiencing are due to menopause / hysterectomy" and/or "you need to give yourself time for your body to adjust to the hormones!" No doctor will admit that any of these side effects are caused by PremPro. Every side effect this woman is experiencing is listed in the product insert sheet - SHE DIDN'T HAVE ANY OF THEM UNTIL SHE WENT ON THE PREMPRO!!!

Subject: Premarin and Your Site

I am in utter awe of your web site on Premarin. I belong to several women's lists mainly dealing with Vulvodynia and Lichen Sclerosis, both diseases of the Vulva and physicians basically are unaware of it nor do they know how to treat it!! Talk about frustrating, or they tell you it's in your head. Anyway in 2 years time I've been trying to educate these women on the difference between Premarin and Estrace, and have told them 'exactly' what you're talking about on your site. I've got over 10,000 files, many are from very well educated, intelligent medical sites, and I've had doctors write me to prove that Estrace is better, and asked to show them where these studies are, and I run into the same brick wall as you have. *sigh*.. yet I 'know' it's true. I've see a few (very few) various scattered articles, or a sentence here or there, but nothing definitive... very frustrating, as they use Premarin in all the major studies I've seen.

Anyway, this disease is so dibilitating, and makes women unable to have sex because of the pain, of ripping or tearing of the vaginal skin, horrible inflammation (no sexual disease) all ruled out, pain that is almost unendurable, where we can't even sit for longer than 5-10 minutes... it's destroyed relationships, some have had extreme surgery, etc.etc. We have children as young as 3 yrs old up to about 70 years old, and some who've had this for 20 years or more. I'm one of the very FEW who's been cured, and I had it for over 10 years, and one of the worst cases imaginable. What did it was using ESTRACE cream, (NOT PREMARIN) Estrace is known to rebuild tissue and that's exactly what it did, it even unfused labial lips, which is why I'm such a strong advocate of Estrace and have been talking about it for over 2 years now.!! I am so glad I found your site and I am in total agreement with all you've said, and I didn't even know your web site existed. (I don't have one)...so you can bet from here on instead of just telling what I know, I'll be sending them to your site. Thank you so much for all your time and effort, it's really appreciated. You can bet I will be writing to the Dept. of Agriculture! If someone would care to write, I'd be happy to respond. Sincerely, Dee Troll DTroll@cboss.com

Subject: Premarin

I just wanted to let you know that I got a chance to speak out against Premarin again this morning. The Chillicothe Gazette is doing an article on citizens who have used the Internet to find out about medicines that they are taking or are going to take, so of course I let them know about my experience with Premarin. The story will appear on the front page of the Sunday paper. Now, some of the women in this area will find out (if they don't know) exactly how it is made. I just had to let the women know what's going on since our doctors won't tell us. When the photographer came to take my picture (it was there along with my story) I took him to the website that has the horses in their stalls and I think he was even shocked. Hope it wakes them up. I feel good since I quit Premarin and am continually feeling better! I think I'm gonna make it! Thanks for your time. B.R.

Subject: Premarin

I am 74 yrs. old and have had eight children. I had a vaginal hysterectomy because it had dropped down (along with a cystocele and rectocele) about ten years ago.  I had stopped menstrating at age 45. I never took any hormone replacement. Recently a pulmonary dr. recomended premarin.  I forget to take it every day, but it doesn't seem to make any difference whether I take it or not.  My friend (same age) was just in the hospital and her doctor told her the same thing mine did - that it prevents osteoporsis and stroke.  She suggested I try the internet for some information. I've always heard that it causes cancer and that is why I never wanted to take it. After reading your web site, I really don't want to take it. I have never had any problems, but I do take high blood pressure medication. Any comments for us?  We are both very skeptical. Thank you, L.K.

Subject: Estrogen

I had a complete hysterecty in 1973.  I would not take the Premarin that was prescribed because I was afraid of the side effects.  I went along very good, no hot flushes or anything.  In about 1981 I developed atrophic vaginitis that was so bad with the burning that I could hardly walk.  I was forced into taking the .625 Premarin and after a few days taking it I noticed my sleep pattern was getting messed up, I was waking up at 4 am, but I still continued to take the Premarin, a few more days passed and I noticed my left leg getting numb and I got very dizzy.  I went to the doctor and my blood pressure went from 120 over 80 to 160 over 110 in just over a week.  I went off the Premarin and the numbness in my leg went away and my blood pressure returned to normal.  My sleep pattern and insomnia was so bad even after I stopped taking the Premarin I ended up having to take antidepressants and Xanax for about a year and a half. I still had the bad vaginitis and burning of the vulva was so bad that I thought I would lose my mind.  I went to quite a few doctors to resolve the problem. I went to one doctor and he put me on .625 Premarin and 10 mg. Provera  He told me that the provera would counteract the effects of the estrogen.  At this point I was desparate. It worked. I took the Premarin and Provera  up until last October.  We  moved to Florida so I had to change doctors.  This new doctor didn't like the idea of the Premarin and Provera.  I told him I coudn't take just estrogen.  He gives me EstraTab to take and he tells me this is much different than Premarin and there are absolutely not side effects.

After about a week and a half I get the same side effects as the Premarin.  I got the insomnia back again. Sometimes I wonder where some of these idiot doctors get their information from. I went for four months trying to resolve the insomnia on my own, but nothing worked.  Even sleeping pills wouldn't work after awhile.  Now I have to take antidepressants and Xanax again.  After being off the hormones for four months I got the atrophic vaginitis back.  Now I am back on the Premarin and Provera. I never heard of anyone getting insomnia from the estrogen.  The psychiatrist tells me that quite a few people have their sleeping patterns messed up from estrogen. This is another thing that they don't tell you and of course the gynecologist would not admit that I got it from estrogen.  He told me I must have a medical condition that is causing it.  Sure he was the medical problem.  Now on account of his stupidity I am back on antidepressants again.  The doctors never listen to their patients. E-mail me back if you ever heard of anyone getting these side effects.

Thank you so much for the information on your web site. I was able to find everything on your site and I am so thankful. WIP is a company out of Wisconsin that a friend informed me of sometime ago. My physician prescribed "Tri-est" combination which is specially mixed at a custom prescription shop. What do you know about this? I did not see it on your chart. My sister and I both had early hysterectomies (less than age 45) as did our mom, who now is battling breast cancer at age 71 after 30 years on Premarin. Please send any info you have on Tri-est or other combination natural hormones. J.B.

I am 44 years of age and have been on Premarin for at least 4 years, I've begun to noticed discoloration of my skin on the upper lips as well as on the sides of my face. I feel strongly that this is due to the medication that I am taking. After reading your web site I was astounded to learn that the medicine was produced from pregnant mare's urine!!! Not only is that cruel to the animals, but what do they think we women are? Please email me to let me know whether you've heard of anyone having these side effects? I will discontinue taking my medicine as of today. J.B.

Subject: Premarin & Vitamin Absorption

In the book "How to Boost your Brain Power" by Roger B. Yepsen, Jr. (1987), I have found some very interesting information, but most of all I would like to share with you info pertaining to Premarin.  Apparently Premarin blocks the absorbtion of Iron and Folic Acid one of the B-Complex nutrients.  A Folate deficiency can cause irritability, and forgetfulness, interfering in the levels of acetylcholine, a critical element for memory.  An Iron deficiency can cause many things including cognitive and memory problems because it is a requirement to carry oxygen to the brain.  There is much more info in the book, but I wanted to share this with you as I have heard many women who are menopausal complain of memory lapses and absentmindeness.  Apparently the brain truly does not age, but without key nutrients or the blockage of, we can experience these problems. It's funny how the nutrients I have suggested in my previous email are also almost exactly the stuff we need to feed our brains as well. I have found that using 'Zinc" in daily supplements has helped greatly in my mental functions.  Also a critical element. Thank you for the info on Natural Hormone Replacement.  N.M.W.

I was so excited to find this website! I am 38 years old, had a hysterectomy at age 31, but they left my ovaries. My problem since the surgery, has been that I have experienced on and off symptoms of perimenopause. Sweating, hot flashes, red, flushed chest most of the time, dry mouth, achiness in joints and muscles. I have been on and off of HRT since my surgery. It seems that doctors cannot decide if i need them or not! I was on Estratest for a while, but went off of them 5 months ago, because they made me feel like I was going to start my period any minute, even though I don't have periods anymore, and very emotional. So........I went off of them. About two months ago, I started feeling bad. About two weeks ago, I felt great! But........now the symptoms are starting again. Reduced appetite, sometimes starving and shaking, dry mouth, headaches, hot all of the time, sweating some at night. My doctor did blood work to check my fsh and other hormones a few days ago, and I am waiting for the results. Anyway, my questions is #1: What should my levels be, fsh, estradiol, testosterone, to consider me perimenopausal and needing hrt? #2: What would be an appropriate hormone with the least side effects If I do need them? I am very fit and active, teaching 7 classes a week, and I don't want that "poochy belly" that hormones caused me to have before. Also, I want to feel normal again. Please help! I am 38, hysterectomy but have ovaries. Thanks, L.O.

Hi, I had a baby in 1998 and another one in 1999. These were planned pregnancies. After the one in 1999 I took the birth control shot Depo Provera and it made me bleed for months. My doctor put me on Premarin to stop the bleeding but it didn't help, but I kept taking it. Now I'm pregnant again and very disappointed about it. Well on the bottle of pills there's a warning sign not to take them if I am pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Do you know what can happen while taking this medicine while being pregnant. I'm very worried about this. I am not ready for another baby, but I don't have a choice now. Do you have any information about taking this medicine while pregnant? Any information you can send me would be appreciated. Thank you.K.J.
{Ed. Note}:Please be sure to read the product insert sheet for Warnings, Contraindications and Precautions as often times doctors do not mention them when prescribing Premarin, PremPro and PremPhase. The product insert sheet says the following regarding use of estrogens/progestins when pregnant.

WHO SHOULD NOT USE ESTROGENS: During pregnancy. If you think you may be pregnant, do not use any form of estrogen-containing drug. Using estrogens while you are pregnant may cause your unborn child to have birth defects. Estrogens do not prevent miscarriage. Also under - CONTRAINDICATIONS: Estrogens/progestins combined should not be given to women known or suspected of being pregnant, including use for missed abortion or as a diagnostic test for pregnancy. Estrogen or progestin may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman.

Subject: PremPhase

Hi, A friend of mine has been given a prescription for PremPhase to help her through her menopause. Well, I told her we ought to find out what it's made out of before she gets the prescription filled. As soon as I saw the word I told her that I thought it was probably made from pregnant mare's urine and found out that it is! Then I took her to the Premarin page on the web and showed her some of the pictures of how these horses are treated and now she's on my side. She is NOT going to get her prescription filled. I still don't take anything and neither does she. We are really a sight here at work, what with the hot flashes and all, but we just kind of laugh about it. Somehow, that helps. I figure one of these days, it will be over and we will be able to work and sleep in comfort. Until then, we are sweating and laughing together. Thanks, B.R.

Many thanks for providing this invaluable information. P.C.

Subject: Natural Progesterone Cream

This is a great website. I am a District Manager with Arbonne International. We have just introduced a natural progesterone cream made to the specifications of Dr. John Lee's formula. It is dose-metered pump and airtight.
All of our consultants are currently being trained in the area of estrogen dominance and HRT. I am horrified to find the side-effects women are suffering from HRT and Premarin. My friend's mother is taking Premarin because her mother had osteoporosis and her doctor will not do a saliva test for her hormonal balance even after she requested it.
I'm going to tell as many consultants I know about this website....It's a great source of information and educational tool. Thank you. S.H.

What is the procedure for discontinuing Prempro? Do I need to see my doctor? I a healthy woman, age 55, and I have been using PremPro for about 4 years. I am small boned, weigh 107, 5'5" tall. I run for 30 minutes three days per week and take lots of calcium. Thank you, L.J., Eugene, OR

Ed. Note: Dr. Susan Love (DR. SUSAN LOVES' HORMONE BOOK) suggests tapering off Premarin: "If you want to consider getting off Premarin at any time, you should consider tapering off. (There's no medical problem with stopping cold turkey, but you may experience severe withdrawal symptoms.) This means alternating one pill with half a pill (or a pill of a lower dosage) for two months, or taking a whole pill every other day. Then go to half a pill (or reduced dosage) every day for two months. Then go to half a pill every other day for two months. Finally, stop. (The pills aren't scored, so you need to break them either with a sharp knife or an inexpensive pill-cutting tool that most pharmacies carry.) If at any time you experience severe symptoms, you're tapering off too fast and need to slow down. Let your health care provider know if you decide to taper off."

My mother passed away this past Jan. from uterine cancer. She had been on Premarin and had been experiencing heavy bleeding.  Her whole life she had been prone to polyps and other reproductive problems.  The doctor thought it was just her body adjusting to the hormones.  He changed her to Prempro.  It got worse.  Two years later, after surgery, chemo, and radiation she died one month after her 63rd birthday.  She will never see her 4-year old granddaughter grow up. She was a high - risk patient as far as risk of cancer from Premarin, I read that myself in the fine print. I can't comprehend why her doctor didn't seem to realize this. As a horse owner, with a degree in equine science, I think the production and marketing of this poison is rather foul anyway.  It is promoted as the woman's cure for everything. Women have been going through menopause since the beginning of our existance.  Why do we need a "cure" for a natural occurance? N.W.

Subject: Premarin Side Effects

Here we go again, the lung doctor just diagnosed me Thursday, I now have treatable Asthma. When I looked up the cause (I don't smoke) the first thing I found was long-term use of hormone therapy (estrogen) gives a woman as much as a 2-fold increased risk of subsequent asthma. I found this information on CBS HealthWatch. There is probably more information out there, but this just jumped out at me. What else can this stuff do to women, and yet doctors, the ones we go to for advice, still prescribe it? Now I have to be on inhalers for the rest of my life (One costs $85 and the other $65 and they only last a week.) More money Wyeth-Ayerst has cost me. One good piece of news, my blood pressure is normal after all these years, so I am off Toprol. The Premarin was giving me the high blood pressure, and no doctor could understand why I was bothered with it. Maybe one day they will all wake up. I have lost two months of work with this asthma, if I could total all the money, taking Premarin has cost me in lost work, hospital and doctor bills, it would probably make me sick.. Oh well, just so the chemical companies and doctors get rich, it doesn't matter about me. Y.K.

An HRT that I have found that works - CombiPatch is a Transdermal Estrogen & Progestin form of HRT made from soy and yams. Since it is a patch it doesn't pass throught the liver, has been shown to reduce Tryglyceride levels (Premarin and Prempro raise them), the dosage is smaller than oral therapies, it is good for cholesterol levels and it works. A far cry from Premarin. Pass it along... Combi Patch is great!!!! No Bleeding too! YEAH!!

Thank you for your many interviews on this subject.  I have recently begun to take Tri-est and natural progesterone after being on Premarin for 13 years.  I think we have to educate some of our doctors and ask for what we want.  I had to do this.  He went along with my wishes but I don't think he would have suggested it.  Thanks again. Subject: Premarin and Natural Alternatives

I am flabbergasted, I am also furious and hopeful.  I did not realize Premarin was a POISON. Because that is what it is - a chemical and moral poison.  As of today I am not taking anymore.  You see, many of the symptoms described by these women are also my symptoms. I knew something was wrong, I also felt my body was sick from the Premarin. As a result I kept cutting my pills into smaller doses.  Intuititively I was right.  Thanks for the vindication. It likely has saved my life.  My weight has dropped one pound since yesterday and I no longer have a 'drumbeat' heart and seem to be able to feel a connectivity with my limbs. I do have a serious back problem, but my legs work a tad better. I could say I should have known better, but I did in fact 'know', only I trusted my doctor, assuming all things considered, that she was qualified, and I not.  So, I don't 'knock' myself for this tragic mistake and I sincerely hope the readers of this website, go easy on themselves, after all, that is why we have 'professionals' - to help us with things we are not trained for.

I feel so strongly about this, that I want to tell someone and help.  I care very much about people and I am both angry, and inspired to help.  Problem is, there doesn't seem to be much I can do except share what I think and feel with other women and hope to the 'Divine' it reaches those who are most in trouble.  GET OFF PREMARIN or any other substance related to Wyeth-Ayerst, they kill WOMEN and they kill horses - what's next? At the very least being on Premarin will make you feel sick, at the worst it will require an ambulance - in between you could be made so sick you need other medication - mentally or physically. The truth.

I have loved horses since I was a young child when I went to live with my uncle after the death of my parents. My uncle rescued abused horses and saved them from slaughter. All the horses I rode had been abused.  And with him all were given what they were owed and more.  He loved them and because of his love for horses, I learned what it was to love something that couldn't respond in the human way.  And I learned to 'grow' and love more. To stretch my ability to include 'non-humans' who had every right to be here and live here and grow here.  Horses have nothing but love and willingness to give.  Loyalty like a dog,   intelligence, like a friend, necessary 'distance' with love, like a cat.  But above all, they will give their lives for something they believe in - us. Premarin is founded on pain, abuse, suffering and endurance in the extreme.  And finally, death. Is it any wonder the 'drug' that comes from them is debilitating? I feel strongly about Premarin and horses and many other things.
I would like to share a very thoroughly researched and highly exciting book, by a Naturopath, Mr. Peter J. D'Adamo, titled: Eat Right For Your Type.  This is NOT a 'diet' book as such.  Apparently all humans have specific 'biochemistry' which happens to be determined by our Blood Types.  Each blood type reacts harmoniously to the appropriate food for that particular blood type and adversely to foods not compatible with it.  This book is the culmunation of 35 years of empirical research.  What I am trying to say by that is it is accredited in the scientific community as being valid.  His findings have been published in the British Medical Journal "Lancet'  and the JAMA.  There are some very intriguing findings in it.  One of them is that women with the Blood Type A, tend to have higher incidences of Breast Cancer.  He states that the apparent cause for this is blood type A's, are eating two kinds of food, common to our regular North American and European diets that increase the propensity for this disease in this particular Blood Type.  I strongly urge the reading of this book. Thank you for the courtesy of an email to express and communicate and to help. N.M.W.

Subject: Prempro

My mother, was a very active 56 year old woman.  Twelve years ago she had heart surgery and had an aortic valve replacement.  No problems, she remained on Coumadin.  Sometime in the summer she began taking Prempro for her osteoporosis.  On September 10, 1999 she died without warning from a blood clot which attached to her artificial valve and eventually (within one day) broke off and went to her brain.  Five days before she died she had terrible symptoms (i.e. trouble breathing, leg cramps, extreme bloating, and these are just to name a few!) and her doctor did absolutely nothing. I have done so much reading on the subject and it makes me absolutely sick that they had her on this in the first place, not to mention those poor innocent horses. No matter what anyone says, our family believes it has to do with the Prempro she started to take.  Has there been any similar cases of this?  Anyone who has any information or similar experiences please e-mail me, my family and I are desperate to come up with an answer to this terrible tragedy.  E-mail address: s.kells@worldnet.att.net. Subject: Fen-Phen and Premarin Together

Hello, I came across your web page and could not believe what I have read. I had no idea that what I am taking daily could be bad for me. I am 34 yrs old, I had a hysterectamy a few years ago. Four months before my surgery I was put on Redux, then switched to Fen-Phen, because Redux was keeping me awake at night. I was on the Phen-Phen for four months (approximately). Things were going pretty well with this drug. I was losing weight and seemed to be adjusting to the side affects. The hell began for me when I had my surgery and was put on Premarin 0.625mg and was still taking Fen-Phen. At the time, the Doctors did not connect the two drugs could be causing my problems.

I work in the mental health field, at a center for people who have phyciatric issues and recognize all the symptoms of a complete melt down. Well, that's what I had. Four weeks after my surgery, I ran out of the Fen-Phen and decided to wait a week or so to get more, I returned to work, It wasn't three days after stopping the Fen-Phen I ended up in the Mental Health Unit at our local hospital. I went completely crazy, racing thoughts, I felt like I was having a heart attack, I could not sleep or eat, I was on a manic high, I was not what you would call a compliant patient. I was not going to the hospital willingly. At the time, I thought maybe it was the Premarin that was causing all my problems, never conecting it could be the Fen-phen and Premarin. The story is long what happened to me, and very painful.

To make a long story short, I had a total nervous breakdown. It took a year and a half to get back to where I was mentally. I feel like two years of my life was taken from me. It wasn't until the research on Fen-Phen came out that I started thinking maybe this is what contributed to my illness. I can not even tell you all that I lost because of this and how to this day I struggle with what happened to me. You see, if I can understand why something happens, than I can let it go. But, no one is helping me find out why. While I was in the hospital I asked if the Fen-Phen could have been causing this, they said "no", I asked if the Premarin could be the cause of it, again "no". I found it hard to believe that someone of my age and no history of psyciatric episodes could be having her first one my age. I just could not believe it. I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar, and medicated against my wishes, which is a whole other story in itself. Have you heard of anyone else that had these syptoms after discontinuing the use of Fen-Phen? Please let me know if you have any info on the mixture of these two drugs and what it can do to you. Thank you for your time,
S.A.

Subject: Women, Horses and HRT: A counselors point of view

Greetings, I am a counselor/psychotherapist and I counsel women who are going through the process of menopause -- I myself am too. Also, I am a lover of all animals, especially horses ---former owner of 2 Arabians and searching for another. First I want to tell you that your website is absolutely wonderful. Keep up the good work.

It is true and unfortunately that many women are put on HRT regimens, many of which can be very harmful. In addition, many women experience and display symptoms of depression, anxiety, and mood swings/disorders, and decrease in cognitive abilities, resulting from hormonal imbalances. Unfortunately, these symptoms are not recognized by many physicians and or psychotherapist/counselors as having a physiological base, due to the fluctuation decline, or imbalance of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels. Once again, unfortunately, many women who experience these symptoms are sent to counseling for their so-called psychological problems and/or are placed on antidepressants.

Granted, there are cases when this may be necessary, but for many it is not! For many women HRT (natural to women/plant extract/bio-identical), foods high in estrogen/progesterone, proper diet, exercise, nutrition, herbs (e.g., St. Johns Wort, Kava , etc.), vitamins, all of which encompasses a holistic/intergrative approach, could solve their problems. Further, some women may also experience a decline or loss of sexual interest/desire --- OR, some women, although they have not experienced loss of sexual desire/interest -- may experience loss of sensitivity resulting in decreased sexual pleasure and frustration. Once again, many times these women are sent to counseling by their physicians to explore and uncover their underlying psychological problems. When in fact the basis is related to estrogen, progesterone, testosterone changes and ovulation changes. I have searched the medical libraries, consulted with physicians, other counselors and pharmacists, talked with pharmaceutical companies, searched the web for some specific answers -- and to find solutions related to sexual changes for women in menopause. Unfortunately, what findings I did come up with were vague and noninformative. And, most suggested psychotherapy. I found this to be amazing, especially since -- upfront, stated my profession, the nature of my inquiry and business.
For those women whose issues not found to have a psychological base, I offer support groups where they can talk about their issues in a safe environment and interact with women who are experiencing similar issues and symptoms. On another topic: At last, it has finally been recognized by the medical field that depression in men could be the result of insufficient testosterone levels. Sad, they still have not recognized that depression in women could also be related to insufficient estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels. As a person dedicated to the physical and mental health of humans, the welfare of animals and last but not least -- as a woman, I commend you and your works. Sincerely and Respectfully,
C C C Counselor

I am 57 years old and started taking Premarin in 1985. I have a heart murmur, heart palpatations, and weight gain. I had a minor heart condition before taking Premarin but since I have been on it, my condition has gotten extremely worse. The fast heartbeat would happen once in six months and would last 15 minutes, then would go away on its own. After I started taking Premarin, it came more often and lasting 1-2 hours. Now I have to have shock treatment to get my heart back to a normal heartbeat. I didn't have irregular heartbeats before I started taking Premarin, I also get short of breath all the time. I also take other medications as well, I have to take blood thinners for the rest of my life because my heart condtion has worsened from the medication. I wouldn't advise anyone to take Premarin.
I hope my experience will help others who are thinking of using Premarin. K.C.

Subject: Premarin side effects

After reading your website I realized that the side effects that I have been experiencing MUST be related to the hormone replacement therapy. I have been taking Premarin for one month. But during that time, starting about 2 weeks ago, I started feeling very anxious, experiencing anxiety attacks and waking up in the morning with a fast heart beat. It was so bad one morning that I thought I was having a heart attack. I have also experienced dizziness upon getting up from a crouching position and seeing spots in front of my eyes. The scariest part was experiencing this anxiety while I was driving home from work. My doctor doesn't want to say that it's the Premarin - but as it is the only thing I have been taking that is new - I feel certain that this is what is causing my symptoms. I am grateful for your website information and of course I have stopped taking Premarin. A grateful reader. S.B.

Hi
I just finished reading your letter regarding Premarin. I will be 49 this Saturday. I had a complete Hysterectomy at age 24. The doctor told me I went through the change of life at that moment of surgery. I was given an injection after surgery and a prescription for 2.5 mg of Premarin when I left the hospital. I decided to stop taking Premarin and I lost 40 lbs in no time at all. My energy increased immensely. I felt 100% better. The pain in my legs and sleepless nights stopped. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. I went to my family doctors and mentioned I stopped taking Premarin. She told me to start taking it again. I told her I would not. I have not taken Premarin in approximately 5 months and the weight has stayed off, I feel great. From the obese aching blahs...to energy filled woman. I love it. I hope things work well for you...Take care...G.G.

Subject: GYN Says Take Premarin - M.D. Says No

I just turned 50. I still get my period every 25 days. I was prescribed Premarin vaginally by my gynecologist after a visit for cervical dysplasia. I never asked for it. When I asked what the contraindications were, he told me that I would have a very moist vagina and would have great intercourse. I should have known better but filled the prescription anyway. After receiving the side effects from my pharmicist, I was shocked that a more thorough history was not done at the time of prescription. I have a history of breast cysts and I am on thyroid medication. I phoned my family doctor who said I should not take it. M.L.

Subject: PremPro

Hi, this may be a strange thing I have come across! My mom who is 61 years old and has been taking PremPro for about 5 years has just told me today that she went to the doctor and he says she has a blood clot in her leg. Since November she has had swelling in her leg and severe pain, because of the holidays, etc. and not being able to get a quick appointment with her doctor -- she was just diagnosed with this today 1/18/2000. The doctor is supposed to call her back to let her know whether this is an acute or chronic blood clot. On Thursday she is supposed to have an MRI done on her leg. The clot was determined by having an ultrasound of the leg. After she told me all this I looked on the internet about acute blood clots, and checking various sites. I was on the phone with her while I was doing this. One of the sites related was The Truth About Premarin. I knew she was taking this for the past 5 years and thought I'd check this out. After reading all of these articles I was floored. I only hope this is not her case, however, it is all too ironic. Her doctor put her on Coumadin and this is where we are until Thursday. If you can help me out with advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I certainly do not want to scare her but I've printed all the articles out for her to read. Please let me know. Thank you. H.H.

Subject: What should I be taking?????

I am turning 38 this year and 2 years ago I had to have a hysterectomy due to extreme endometriosis. I stopped taking Premarin 3 months ago since I had heard that a lot of European women do not take it and seem to have no problems. My mother has had many strokes that has left her incapacitated in an extended care unit. She has been taking Premarin for approximately 35 years. This was one of the reasons I decided to quit, I do not know if Premarin has had anything to do with her condition. There is no stroke history in the family. I have asked pharmacists about what to take, but they are vague about it. Could you please email me and recommend what I could take as a substitute. I live just outside Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. You have done a fantastic job on this web page on this very important subject. I would be honoured to have my email letter on your site. I hope that other women are taking advantage of your site to learn more about Premarin and it's effects. Thank you again, Yours sincerely, P.M.

I was given this drug today for the first time. I did ask my doctor if I could take something else. He said with me having loss of memory. This low dose would be the best drug for me to start. I sure hope he is right!! S.L.

Subject: PremPro

I was on PremPro for 4 months and experienced very strange feelings one night while driving (tightness, fainting) and ended up with high blood pressure (usually have low BP) At the same time I had changes in my breast and thought it was normal because of the PremPro -- turned out to be 3.8cm tumor and I had a masectomy a week later. I attribute this to Prempro and want to have contact with other women who have had same experience. K.S. kgs00@aol.com

Ed. Note:I have been keeping names and email addresses private, however, this woman is asking others who have experienced the side effects she experienced to please contact her at: kgs00@aol.com
